First, is Hemp Granola Healthy?

Yes, it is. Unlike most of the granola bars, you’ll find at a local store, hemp granola is made from natural ingredients, so it’s totally safe. Furthermore, since it’s made from hemp hearts, it has several other health benefits discussed below.

It is Nutritious

Hemp hearts, commonly known as hemp seeds, are remarkably nutritious. They contain about 30% fat, are rich in two essential fatty acids, alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3), linoleic acid (omega-6).

Hemp seeds are also a good source of vitamin E and minerals, like potassium, phosphorus, sulfur, magnesium, zinc, and iron.

Can You Make Granola with Steel-cut Oats?

Yes, you can. There are about four kinds of oats: old-fashioned, steel-cut, quick, and instant oatmeal. Steel-cut oats are the least processed of all, so they take a little longer to cook.

You should also expect a slight change in flavor and texture when you use steel-cut oats in your recipes, but they’ll taste just as good.

How to Make Hemp Granola

Although making granola may seem complicated, it is really easy. In fact, waiting for it to cool down is more challenging than preparing it.  

Here are three hemp granola recipes for you to try out.

Recipe #1: Coconut Flavored Hemp Granola

This recipe will give you a subtly sweet and super crunchy hemp granola. If you don’t have much of a sweet tooth, it’s the perfect coconut hemp snack for any occasion.

You’ll need nuts and seeds to add variety, texture, and nutrients to your snack; dates and maple syrup for sweetness and hemp hearts. You can have your granola with a glass of almond milk or yogurt. Here’s the full recipe

Ingredients

  • 6 oz. uncooked almonds
  • 4 oz. uncooked pumpkin seeds
  • 4 oz. uncooked pecans
  • 8 oz. raw walnuts
  • 8 oz. unsweetened coconut (shredded, desiccated, or flakes)
  • 8 oz. hemp hearts
  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds
  • 6 oz. melted coconut oil-
  • one teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 16 oz. of maple syrup
  • A pinch of sea salt
  • 32 oz. of chopped and pitted Medjool dates.

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 250 degrees. Put your pumpkin seeds, almonds, walnuts, and pecans into a food processor, then pulse a few times to slice the seeds and nuts into smaller pieces. You want to have a few chunky pieces in your granola, so you shouldn’t process too much.

Put the mixture in a big transparent bowl, then add all the remaining ingredients except for the dates and stir. Make an even spread of the mixture onto a large parchment-lined baking sheet.

You may need two sheets if one isn’t enough.

Bake for half an hour. Take your hemp granola out of the oven, add the dates, and then give the mixture a thorough stir. Make for another half hour. Your granola should now have a golden brown color.

Take it out of the oven, let it cool, and enjoy. It will get crunchier as it cools down. Remember to keep any remainders in a glass jar if you want them to stay fresh and crunchy.

Recipe #2: Healthy Granola Recipe

Ingredients

  • 16 oz. rolled oats
  • 4 oz. hemp hearts
  • Half teaspoon Himalayan salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 2 oz. cold-pressed coconut oil
  • 2 oz. honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees, and then line a jelly roll pan with baking paper.

Stir the hemp hearts, oats, and cardamom in a large bowl

Whisk all the wet ingredients together in a small bowl until they’re evenly mixed.

Pour the liquid ingredients over the dry, then stir until everything is moist.

Make an even spread of the mixture on the jelly roll pan.

Place the mixture into a preheated oven for 15 – 18 minutes. Remember to stir every five minutes. The granola should have a golden brown color by the time you’re done.

Recipe #3: Toasted Steel-cut Oats Granola

Ingredients

  • 24 oz. steel-cut oats
  • 8 oz. rolled oats
  • 4 oz. shredded unsweetened coconut
  • 4 oz. sliced or slivered almonds
  • 2 oz. cup hemp hearts
  • 2 oz. wheat germ
  • 2 oz. cup unsalted sunflower seeds
  • 6 oz. cup pumpkin seeds, unsalted
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 4 oz. raw sugar
  • 6 oz. vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 6 oz. honey
  • 6 oz. unsweetened coconut flakes

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit

Stir the nuts, grains, seeds, salt, sugar, and cinnamon in a large bowl

In a separate bowl, mix the oil, honey, vanilla. If necessary, gently heat the mixture in a microwave or saucepan to melt the honey

Pour the liquid over the dry ingredients and stir

Transfer the mixture onto a baking tray lined with parchment paper.

Bake for 20 minutes

Stir and add coconut flakes. Put your mixture back into the oven for another 15-20 minutes until it’s golden brown.

Once it’s cool, break it into chunks and store it in a sealed container.

Alterations

If you want it crumbly, stir every 10 minutes while baking, and stir just after taking the baking pan out of the oven.

This recipe assumes you have raw seeds and nuts. If they’re already roasted, add them in the final 15-20 minutes of baking with the flaked coconut. You may add a cup of dried fruit after the granola cools.

How to Enhance your Hemp Granola Recipes

You may use any ground spice in place of the cardamom, vanilla, and cinnamon described in the recipes we’ve just covered.

You can also trade honey for maple syrup if you want to keep your granola vegan. If you wish to have your granola really sweet, add half a cup of chocolate chips after it cools.

How to Make CBD Oil

Choosing Your Starting Material

The first step in making homemade cannabis oil is acquiring high-quality hemp flowers, leaves, or stems. Cannabis flower contains a higher concentration of the essential oils you’re after than leaves and stems.

High-CBD hemp flower can be purchased from your local dispensary and should be lab-tested for purity and potency, or you can grow your own at home if it’s legal to do so. The buds should have a strong aroma and a vibrant green color, indicating they are of the highest quality.

Consider the strain you use since each strain comes with a unique chemical profile. Some strains produce more relaxing effects, while others produce energizing effects.

Activating Your Cannabis

Once you have your buds, it’s time to activate the CBD. This process, called decarboxylation, converts cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) into its parent and active compound, CBD. 

To decarboxylate the buds, you will need to preheat your oven to 212º F and spread the broken-up buds on a baking sheet or baking dish with a see-through cover. Check every 10 minutes to determine when the oven hits 212º F. 

When the oven has reached your desired temperature, bake your cannabis for 1 hour and 20 minutes, checking the temperature periodically. After 1 hour and 20 minutes, turn off the heat and remove the buds from the oven with an oven mitt.

Infusing Into a Carrier Oil

Now that the CBD flower is activated, it’s time to infuse it into a carrier oil. A carrier oil is a neutral oil used to absorb CBD and make it easier to consume. Without the fatty oil, the cannabinoid cannot be efficiently absorbed into the body.

Common carrier oils include coconut oil, olive oil, and hemp seed oil. Making CBD coconut oil or other CBD infusion is easy. The ratio of CBD to carrier oil can vary depending on your desired strength. Combine the decarboxylated buds and carrier oil in a mason jar and seal it tight.

Heating the Mixture

The next step is to heat the mixture. This can be done in a few different ways, but one popular method is using a double boiler or slow cooker. A double boiler is a pot with a smaller pot inside it, which is filled with water. The mason jar with the CBD and carrier oil mixture are placed inside the smaller pot, then heated on a stovetop. 

The water in the larger pot will gently heat the oil mixture, allowing the CBD to infuse into the carrier oil. Keep the heat low to medium and let it simmer for 30 to 60 minutes, stirring occasionally. As the oil infuses, you will notice the aroma of the oil changing and becoming more potent.

Straining the Mixture

After the infusion process is complete, the next step is to strain the mixture. This can be done by pouring the mixture through a cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer, separating the oil from the plant matter. The resulting homemade cannabis oil can be stored in a dark glass bottle in a cool and dry place to maintain its potency.

Making CBD Oil with Alcohol

Making CBD oil with alcohol is a popular extraction method as it is relatively simple and can be done at home. This method involves using high-proof alcohol to extract CBD from the cannabis plant. The process can be broken down into a few simple steps.

After decarboxylating and preparing the cannabis material, put the cannabis in a jar and seal it tight. You won’t need to decarboxylate the cannabis beforehand. Once the cannabis is in the jar, pour the ethanol, ensuring the cannabis is completely covered.

Allow the ethanol mixture to sit for at least 24 hours. You can let it sit for up to 3 months. During this time, shake the jar daily to allow the ethanol to dissolve the cannabis trichomes more efficiently. As the ethanol absorbs more trichomes, it will turn green or brown.

You can use the same straining process as the CBD oil made with a carrier oil (listed above).

Cannabis edibles have become increasingly popular as people accept the benefits offered by THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids.

Edibles come in various shapes, colors, sizes, and types including baked goods, savory treats, beverages, mints, gummies, oils and butters, and many more edible options.

Marijuana’s legality in many states makes it easier for cannabis product providers to make edibles and sell them. Some people don’t like to smoke or can’t because of medical reasons, making cannabis edibles an ideal option.

While it may be easy to eat cannabis, there are many considerations to keep in mind to have a safe and fun experience.

Before you ingest edibles, read the label so you know the total dosage. There are dosage rules for cannabis edibles.

The creators of cannabis-infused edibles have to account for dosage in order to remain compliant with state rules and regulations, and you do as well for safe consumption.

Ingestion

Smoking marijuana is the most common method of cannabis ingestion. You could light up a joint or a glass pipe or bong and be quickly rewarded with a fast-acting and noticeable high, depending on how much you consume, how often you consume, the cannabinoids included, and the potency of the product.

With cannabis edibles, you have to wait for the onset of effects of THC or other cannabinoids. It can usually take an hour or two and sometimes longer, depending on several things such as how often you ingest cannabis, the amount consumed, your weight, and THC content.

The peak of the effects can come between the 2- and 5-hour mark after consumption. The effects can subside after 6 to 12 hours.

Novice marijuana users sometimes become impatient while waiting for the high to take effect and think it’s not coming, only to eat more edibles and then discover the paranoia and other adverse effects are too much to handle.

In some smoking circles, this is called “greening out.” You don’t want to go there. If you do happen to overconsume cannabis edibles, there are plenty of ways to reduce the negative effects.

Generally, when you eat a cannabis edible, it goes through your digestive system and is metabolized in the liver. There, the THC is converted into its more potent and longer-lasting metabolite: 11-hydroxy-THC.

When taken sublingually (under the tongue), edibles like tinctures and oils are instantly absorbed through the membranes into the bloodstream. Sublingual products can take effect in as little as 30 seconds to 5 minutes. Its effects can last up to 3 hours.

Nanoemulsions such as oils and isolates also produce fast-acting effects since they are able to be absorbed into the bloodstream through the mouth, throat, esophagus, and stomach lining instead of being metabolized in the liver. Nanoemulsions can take effect in 10 to 15 minutes.

Let’s look at how the dosage rules for edibles can make a difference in your experience.

What Impacts the Edibles High

Metabolism

There are various things that contribute to how people react to cannabis edibles. Metabolism is one thing that plays an integral role. For example, someone with a faster metabolism may feel the effects of THC in cannabis edibles much faster than the average person.

Empty vs. Full Stomach

Another thing that impacts an edible’s high is whether you’ve eaten or not before ingesting an infused edible.

We don’t recommend ingesting cannabis edibles on an empty stomach, especially for first-time users, due to the intense and unpredictable effects.

You don’t need to eat a huge meal, per se, but you should have some food in your stomach, even if you have to munch on something.

Cannabinoid Content

The type and amount of cannabinoid in the edible also affect how you experience the effects. For example, an edible with a high dose of THC produces the intoxication characterized by euphoria, relaxation, focus, creativity, and pain relief.

However, some users may be more prone to its side effects, which include change in time perception, impaired coordination, increased anxiety, short term memory loss, and fast heart rate.

If you don’t want to experience the intoxication of THC, you can go with an edible that has primarily CBD. CBD does not have any intoxicating effects. Instead, the cannabinoid produces relaxing and clear-headed effects. In fact, CBD is preferred by users with anxiety due to its stress-relieving properties and minimal side effects.

Homemade vs. Prepackaged Edibles

Homemade and pre-packaged edibles can produce different experiences depending on how they were made.

Making cannabis edibles at home may not yield as precise results as edibles made using commercial machinery and procedures. Edibles manufacturers must create edibles that contain a specified range of cannabinoids to remain state-compliant

First, determining the potency per serving is difficult to do when making edibles at home. Primarily, distributing the cannabis oil or butter evenly across the edible is important. Stirring the cannabis thoroughly into the mixed ingredients ensures proper homogenization.

Ultimately, the effects of homemade edibles tend to be a bit more unpredictable than edibles from a licensed dispensary.

10 mg Dosage Rule

There’s an old saying among experienced cannabis users: You can always eat more, you can never eat less. Make sure you use marijuana strains with lower THC levels if you’re a first-time or low-tolerance user. It’s best to start with 2.5 to 5 mg (or less) instead of a 10 mg dosage. It should be reduced if the THC is at a higher level. Most cannabis edibles have at least 2% THC.

If you are experienced with ingesting infused edibles, then you’ll probably be able to handle a 10 mg dosage of cannabis edibles. If you want to have more, then wait for an hour or two before consuming another 5 mg or 10 mg dose. Taking a lower dosage of THC is best when you have already consumed 10 mg.

Experienced edibles chefs balance the effects of THC by mixing edibles with CBD into the menu. Mix a couple of CBD gummies with your THC gummies and you may get the best of both worlds.

Products with a 1:1 CBD-to-THC may provide balanced effects that minimize THC’s adverse effects. However, overconsumption of these products can still produce negative effects.

Other Dosage Rules For Cannabis Edibles

When you are buying cannabis edibles, you should pay close attention to the instructions on the label and packaging. If you buy a chocolate bar or brownie, and it contains 80 mg THC, it means you should not consume it in just one sitting.

You should only eat a small portion (5 mg or 10 mg) and leave the rest for another time. Don’t be greedy!

The delicious taste may tempt you but maintain some discipline and resolve. One more thing: don’t drink alcohol when eating cannabis edibles. The impact could be more than you can handle.

In addition, avoid buying and consuming edibles from unlicensed sources since these are not tested for potency and purity. Only licensed products are required to be tested by a third-party laboratory for cannabinoid and contaminant levels.

Homemade High Hummus

MAKES: 2 Cups

1 (15.5 ounce) can garbanzo beans (chickpeas), drained
1/3 cup pitted Spanish Manzanilla olives
1 teaspoon minced garlic
2 tablespoons Marijuana oil
2 tablespoons lemon juice
~Place garbanzo
1 ½ teaspoons chopped fresh basil
1 teaspoon cilantro leaves
salt and pepper to taste
Place beans, olives, and garlic into the bowl of a blender or food processor. Pour in Marijuana oil and lemon juice; season with basil, cilantro, salt, and pepper. Cover and puree until smooth. Hummus can be served immediately, or covered, and stored in the refrigerator until ready to use.

Black Bean Buds Hummus

Makes: 8 Servings

1 clove garlic
1 (15 ounce) can black beans; drain and reserve liquid
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 1/2 tablespoons tahini
3/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon paprika
10 Greek olives
¼ cup Marijuana Oil
Mince garlic in the bowl of a food processor. Add black beans, 2 tablespoons reserved liquid, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, tahini, 1/2 teaspoon cumin, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper, ¼ cup cannabis oil, process until smooth, scraping down the sides as needed. Add additional seasoning and liquid to taste. Garnish with paprika and Greek olives.

Serves: 8

¼ cup Marijuana oil
1 tablespoon minced garlic
½ teaspoon sea salt
8 Roma tomatoes, sliced
2 (12 inch) pre-baked pizza crusts
8 ounces shredded Mozzarella cheese
4 ounces shredded Fontina cheese
10 fresh basil leaves, washed, dried
½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
½ cup crumbled feta cheese

Stir together Marijuana oil, garlic, and salt; toss with tomatoes, and allow to sit for 15 minutes. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Brush each pizza crust with some of the tomato marinade. Sprinkle the pizzas evenly with Mozzarella and Fontina cheeses. Arrange tomatoes overtop, then sprinkle with shredded basil, Parmesan, and feta cheese. Bake in preheated oven until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown, about 10 minutes.

Kidney Bean and Marijuana Mushroom Veggie Burger

SERVES: 4 – 6

2 medium carrots
1 cup oats
1 14 ounce can kidney beans, drained
½ cup mushrooms
½ onion
½ red or yellow bell pepper
1 egg
2 tbsp organic ketchup (optional as it adds sugar)
½ tsp garlic salt
¼ cup Marijuana oil
Process carrot in food processor until grated. Add oats and beans and pulse a few times.
Add remaining ingredients and process until well combined but still slightly coarse. Chill for at least 45 minutes then form into 4 – 6 patties.
Cook these mushroom veggie burgers on the grill and add ¼ cup Marijuana oil.

Black Bean Marijuana Veggie Burgers

SERVES: 10

2 cups black beans cooked
½ cup green pepper, chopped fine
½ cup red onion, chopped fine
1 large stalk celery, chopped fine
2 -4 cloves garlic minced (depends how much you like garlic)
1 tsp cumin
1 tbsp Marijuana oil
¼ tsp cayenne pepper
Salt and pepper to taste
1/3 cup hummus
½ cup rolled oats
2 slices sprouted grain or spelt bread crumbled into tiny pieces (hint: blender or food processor works great)

Mash or puree half the beans, add reserved beans and all other ingredients EXCEPT hummus. Mix well by hand. Add enough of the hummus or other liquid ingredient to moisten mixture fairly well. Mixture may seem a little sticky, but it’s better than a bit dry, because they WILL dry out while cooking. Cook on medium until brown, approx. 10 – 15 min per side.

Buffalo Bud Chili

SERVES: 4

2 tbsp Marijuana oil
½ cup chopped onions
2 medium garlic cloves, minced
1½ cups chopped celery
1 cup chopped green bell pepper
1½ lb ground buffalo
2 tsp dried thyme leaves
2 tsp chili powder
2 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp salt
8 oz diced tomatoes (canned is fine)
12 oz (1 jar) prepared salsa

Melt Marijuana oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sauté onions, garlic, celery, and green pepper 3–4 minutes, or until onion is translucent. Add buffalo, thyme, chili powder, and cumin and cook for 5–6 minutes, stirring frequently. Add salt, tomatoes, and salsa to pot. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer for a minimum of 1 hour. Serve in bowls alone or over cauliflower.

2 tablespoon Marijuana butter
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped carrots
1 cup chopped green bell pepper
1 cup chopped red bell pepper
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 ½ cups chopped fresh mushrooms
1 (28 ounce) can whole peeled tomatoes with liquid, chopped
1 (15 ounce) can black beans, undrained
1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, undrained
1 (15 ounce) can pinto beans, undrained
1 tablespoon cumin
1 ½ tablespoons dried oregano
1 ½ tablespoons dried basil
½ tablespoon garlic powder

Heat the Marijuana butter in a large pot over medium heat. Cook and stir the garlic, onion, and carrots in the pot until tender. Mix in the green bell pepper and red bell pepper. Season with chili powder. Continue cooking 5 minutes, or until peppers are tender.

Mix the mushrooms into the pot. Stir in the tomatoes with liquid, black beans with liquid, kidney beans with liquid, and pinto beans with liquid. Season with cumin, oregano, basil, and garlic powder. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium, cover, and cook 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
