Canadian adult-use cannabis sales stay flat in September

Monthly Canadian sales of legal adult-use cannabis barely increased between August and September, totaling 389.9 million Canadian dollars ($291 million).

The cannabis sales total in August was revised downward, also to CA$389.9 million, by national data agency Statistics Canada.

On an annual basis, Canadian recreational cannabis sales have increased 12.2% since September 2021.

Monthly marijuana sales in Ontario, the largest provincial market in Canada, grew 1.1% month-over-month to CA$155.5 million in September.

In the second-largest market, Alberta, sales increased 2% on a monthly basis to CA$68.7 million.

British Columbia’s September sales were up by 0.6% over August, to CA$59.4 million.

Those gains in Canada’s three most valuable provincial marijuana markets were offset by month-over-month declines in the remaining seven provinces:

Los Angeles’ marijuana social equity program latest to be challenged

A Michigan man challenging marijuana social equity programs across the country as unconstitutional has filed another lawsuit against a local licensing program, this time against Los Angeles.

Kenneth Gay, a principal of Variscite, a California-based corporation, lives in Michigan, where he was arrested and convicted for a marijuana offense.

According to a lawsuit filed Nov. 30 in federal court in Los Angeles, Gay submitted an application for a license in Los Angeles under that city’s social equity program.

As of Oct. 24, city regulators had not verified his equity status for a Dec. 8 license lottery.

Under current L.A. law, to be eligible for a permit under the city’s social equity program, an applicant must have a “prior California Cannabis Arrest or Conviction” and either be low income or live in an area identified as disproportionately affected by policing.

Colorado medical marijuana now can be redesignated as adult use

Marijuana grown under a Colorado medical cultivation permit can now be reclassified as retail and sold in adult-use stores, one of a bevy of new rules that went into effect in the state Thursday.

Among the other tweaks to state law announced by the Colorado Marijuana Enforcement Division (MED) are new safety protections for employees engaged in cannabis manufacturing and an extended eligibility period for would-be social equity licensees.

Workers engaged in “certain” manufacturing tasks are now required to wear respirators as well as masks and goggles.

And equity applicants now have two years to navigate the licensing process after a finding of eligibility, up from one year.

Also, a report on “intoxicating hemp products,” such as hemp-derived delta-9 THC, is due to the Colorado Legislature on Jan. 1, the MED announced in a news release.

That report could recommend changes to state law.
