4th of July: A Brief History
Traditionally, we celebrate Independence Day on the 4th of July. Most believe to be the day the declaration of independence was signed, but that actually happened on July 2, 1776. Two days later, on the 4th, Congress approved the final text of the Declaration, meaning our independence was made official on that day. Fun fact, the declaration wasn’t signed until August 2nd of that year, but at that point it was just a formality.
Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, political speeches, and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States.
It just so happens that America in general, is also gaining cannabis independence. What was once a completely illegal product, is now gaining so much support that 18 states have recreational legalizations, 37 states have implemented some type of medical program, and about half the population of the country now live in places where they can smoke marijuana without a problem.
The Cannabis Industry: Past and Present
Cannabis and other psychedelic plants have been used therapeutically in Eastern traditional medicine for centuries and its use has been noted in numerous different countries and continents throughout history. Even in the United States, the value of cannabis as a healing plant was known far and wide.
Back then, Eli Lilly, Bristol-Meyer’s Squib, and other major pharmaceutical brands were using cannabis extracts, sometimes even whole plant matter, in their formulations. A New York Times article from 1876 even cites the use of cannabis to cure a condition referred to back then as “dropsy”, which was swelling in the soft tissues from an accumulation of fluid in the body. Today this would be known as edema.
Before 1910, the word “marijuana” did not even exist in American culture. It was known by its scientific name because recreational use was not very widespread at the time. Following a wave of LEGAL immigration in the early 1900s, the idea of recreational cannabis use was on the rise. The government used that as a scapegoat to push ridiculous cannabis regulations, but it’s one of those situations where it really is hard to determine cause and effect: was the uptick in cannabis use caused by the new citizens and population growth, or where these two events completely unrelated and just occurring at the same time? Cannabis was nothing new and increased curiosity and use seemed inevitable.
Regardless, once the government realized people were using cannabis for fun and not just to treat chronic illnesses, the war on weed began. A familiar name in modern cannabis history is Harry Anslinger, the first commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. When he got appointed is when the word “marijuana” start making the headlines and the word “cannabis” became of thing of the past. It really shows how powerful is the parallel between language and public opinion.
Although “cannabis” was a medicinal plant that was relatively well-known in the United States, “marijuana” (spelled “marihuana” at the time) was seen as a dangerous drug that creeped in the shadows of America’s counterculture. Many point to the fact that without his fabricated war on “drugs”, Anslinger would have had nothing to do and inevitably lost his position. So he took some disturbingly racist ideologies, a lot of fear mongering, and a touch of hardcore conservativism and weaved together what would end up being a decades long campaign against a harmless plant and many innocent people.

Folks, the numbers are in, and sheesh, you guys really went for it this Independence Day weekend.
Thanks to data provided by a handful of cannabis analytics and marketing companies including Headset, Flowhub, and Lantern, we have some bold insights into the power of July 4 to compel you, America’s Fans of The Plant, to buy weed. A lot of weed.
Read on to learn more about the types of products folks bought, when sales peaked, and how the holiday weekend compared to other times of the year.
Only 4/20 racked up more sales than July 1
We all know that 4/20 is the Holy Grail, the biggest day for cannabis sales in America. But, at least so far in 2022, July 1st gets to take home the silver medal.
According to data provided by Flowhub, on July 1st—which fell on a Friday—sales climbed 15% higher than an average Friday.
This data suggests that cannabis consumers wanted to stock up for the weekend on July 1, and then get their party on without having to head back to the store. Respect.
Sales remained strong over the weekend on July 2 and 3—just a couple of percentage points over average weekend sales—and then they dropped a tiny bit below average Monday sales figures on the holiday itself.

Pre-rolls had a moment over the holiday weekend
It’s no surprise that consumers leaned into the Holy Trinity—flower, edibles, and vapes—over the holiday weekend.
But Headset reports that pre-rolls saw a 6% increase on July 4, specifically.
The home delivery platform Lantern presented similar data, and pointed out that cannabis beverages also got more love than usual.

Canada Day didn’t fare quite as well
While Americans proved ready to open their wallets for Independence Day, our neighbors to the north didn’t exactly turn out the same way for the national holiday of Canada Day, on July 1.
According to Headset, sales on the holiday itself dipped 23% below the average of the previous four Fridays.
Residents of Ontario really didn’t feel like shopping: sales dropped 29% on the holiday.
I guess the Canadians just prefer to celebrate their national holidays in a different style, eh?

If you live in a state where weed is legal, you may be considering ditching the 12-pack of domestic beer in favor of supporting your local dispensary this holiday weekend. This switch certainly saves you calories that can be spent on BBQ and cocktails. Plus, no one wants a hangover heading into work on the 5th.
The Fourth of July is actually a huge cannabis holiday. In fact, according toForbes, this FOJ is “likely racking up the highest number in sales for any day in the market this summer.” With all this marijuana being purchased in preparation for this major holiday, we wanted to offer a few reminders and tips to help you have a smooth, healthy and safe Independence Day.

National Parks And Federal Property Are Off Limits For Cannabis
It is important you remember that just because weed is legal in your state does not mean it is legal everywhere in your state. As we previouslyreported, marijuana possession and usage is prohibited on federal property.
This is particularly critical to remember on July 4th, as many fireworks celebrations and events happen on federal property. Federal property includes national parks and monuments too – so make sure you know exactly where you are headed before packing your cannabis.
Don’t Forget To Tell Your Friends If You Spike Their BBQ
Weed treats and barbecue ideas are becoming more popular, and can really take your FOJ BBQ to the next level. Just be sure to label anything with weed and let everyone know. Like we havesaid before, no need to get overly scientific. Just be sure to mention what is in them, how strong they are, and if you have tried them. If you are attending a more transient “pop-in, pop-out” function, it is best to keep your cannabis treats tucked away. Offer them out yourself as people arrive to avoid any tragic mishap.
Consider Low Dose Edibles For The Main Festivities
If you are attending a big fireworks show at night, or some other long event with lots of people, remember that July 4th is a marathon and not a sprint. Heat, marijuana and lots of walking is enough to wipe anyone out. Make sure you find shade when you can, stay hydrated, and consider your method of consuming cannabis.
If you have a long day ahead, consider lower dose edibles, or other low-THC methods. This way you can have a relaxed day without getting burnt out. This method also ensures you aren’t stone cold sober by the time the fireworks start.
Keep You Weed Stored Securely
July 4th is known to be a rowdy, and often wet holiday, with water balloons and squirt guns being a preferred way to cool off. It is also common to see unsuspecting pool party guests get dunked in a pool against his or her will. While this is usually all in good fun, the last thing you need is a soggy joint or your weed floating all over a pool.
Follow the basic rules of weed storage if you plan on being out and about for the entire day. Either keep your product in its original container (if that’s the law), or grab a small mason jar to nip any potential disasters in the bud. And if all else fails, here’s What To Do If Your Weed Gets Wet.
The Odor Doesn’t Always Attract The Right Crowd
Remember that Independence Day is a holiday that all Americans celebrate. This includes people who are opposed to marijuana usage, and also their children. Sure, the latest Pew research pollsays two thirds of Americans support marijuana legalization, but that also means one third does not. All you need is one of those opponents to catch wind of your joint to really spoil your high.
Maybe you are going to a party with lots of weed everywhere, in which case smoking joints in public might not matter. Just be aware that marijuana is still a problem for many Americans, especially if it is smoked around children. If you are uncertain of the crowd, consider an odorless vape pen, edibles or cannabis beverages instead.
July 4th is known for huge gatherings and elaborate fireworks shows, but if you plan on spending the day high you might want to consider a quieter location. Think about less crowded spots to enjoy the fireworks. Spending quality time with those you care about is a much better way to enjoy your high than battling for a $30 parking spot in 95 degree heat. In other words, consider the road less traveled.
Have A Blast
You are officially ready to celebrate now that you have more information about how to stay safe, high and healthy this weekend. After all, there are few holidays that allow for so many fun, free, lively activities among friends and family. So go forth and enjoy July 4th!
Cannabis software and intelligence company Akerna (NASDAQ: KERN) released a new flash report this morning, predicting the 4th of July, 2021 will bring in over $206,000,000 in legal cannabis sales across the United States.
With Connecticut being the most recent state to legalize, 38 states now have legislation permitting an adult-consumption and/or medical cannabis program. Not everyone has dispensaries up and running yet, so this data doesn’t reflect sales in all 38 legal states.

2021 Fourth of July Sales Predictions
According to the flash report, historical data shows cannabis sales typically spike the weekend before the Fourth of July and Friday, July 2nd is expected to retail nearly $91,000,0000 — up 60% from an average Friday. The report predicts July 2nd to be the second highest sales day of the year, just after 4/20. Saturday, July 3rd, is forecasted to generate $72,000,000 in cannabis sales, with Sunday, July 4th, expecting to see $43,000,0000. Sundays are typically the lowest sales day of the week when you look at historical data, but dispensaries will still see more sales than normal because it’s a holiday.
“Year over year, we’ve seen a 23% increase in the number of products consumers and patients are purchasing for the 4th of July holiday weekend,” said James Ahrendt, Business Intelligence Architect at Akerna. “With the holiday falling on a Sunday this year, dispensaries should be evaluating staffing and preparing inventory ahead of the weekend to ensure they are ready to accommodate these increases in both traffic and sales.”

Akerna regularly releases flash reports. Last year’s 4th of July report anticipated an 87% increase in sales over the 4th of July weekend, with Americans expected to spend more on cannabis than bbq meats. Historically, consumers spend more than $371 million on chicken during the two weeks leading up to July 4th, equalling about $37 million per day. Akerna predicted cannabis sales to reach over $260 million in just three days, generating about $86 million per day.
Data for Akerna’s flash reports are provided by MJ Platform, a regulatory compliance technology company in the cannabis space.
