Drinking Four Cups Of Tea Daily Could Lower Risk Of This Disease, Finds Study

Tea has long been linked with a variety of health benefits. Now, a new study claims that consuming four cups of tea a day could help prevent type 2 diabetes.

The study, conducted in China and presented at this year’s European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Annual Meeting in Stockholm, Sweden, was based on a review of 19 cohort studies that included the data of a million people.

While tea has been linked with anti-oxidating properties, for the purposes of this study, researchers wanted to know if the drink had an effect on type 2 diabetes, conducting a cohort study and a dose-response analysis to get a full picture of tea’s effects.

Participants filled out a questionnaire where they listed out their tea drinking habits while also including information on their daily routines, including their exercise schedule, and whether they drank alcohol or smoked. This part of the study provided no clear answers. Researchers then turned to cohort studies, which showed a fuller picture of patient’s health over a decade. Here, they found that patients who consumed tea regularly were associated with a 17% decrease in type 2 diabetes.

“Our results are exciting because they suggest that people can do something as simple as drinking four cups of tea a day to potentially lessen their risk of developing type 2 diabetes”, said the study’s lead author Xiaying Li.

No matter the type of tea, the gender of the person drinking it, or the area where they lived, the effects were the same. At least four cups of tea a day equaled fewer odds of developing type 2 diabetes.

While researchers need to study the situation more clearly in order to be fully sure of their results, the study is promising. It could provide a simple way for people to be healthier while they do something that brings them a little bit of joy.

Invariably, the blood sugar level in the body becomes high, leads to inflammation, and ultimately produces more insulin resistance. This unhealthy cycle continues and the final product is high blood sugar which in turn causes obesity.

This unhealthy cycle also involved the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS works through the unique relationship between endocannabinoids which directly or indirectly affect cannabinoid receptors in the body. The operation of the ECS can promote overeating of processed foods and low nutrient foods which increased the number of endocannabinoids. With increased appetite and more overeating, the unhealthy cycle continues with high blood sugar and insulin resistance.

Is Cannabis Legalization Associated With Declining Obesity Rates?

According to data published in the journal Health Economics, US states with legal marijuana sales “may experience a decrease in state-level obesity rates.”

A NORML report showed that researchers affiliated with North Dakota State University “compared obesity rates in Washington state following legalization to those of a synthetic control state.”

The study “Assessing the impact of recreational marijuana legalization on obesity,” noted that researchers “examine this relationship by using a synthetic control approach to examine the impact of legalized recreational marijuana access on obesity rates by comparing Washington State to a synthetically constructed counterfactual.”

“We find that recreational marijuana’s introduction did not lead to increased obesity rates and may have led to decreases in obesity,” they continued.

“As more states gravitate to decriminalization, expanded medicinal use, and legalized recreational use of marijuana, our findings provide important insights into contemporary drug policy,” the authors concluded.

In addition, some case-control studies have reported that folks with a history of cannabis use are “less likely than abstainers to be obese or have type 2 diabetes.” Studies also previously linked marijuana use to higher rates of physical activity.

According to the World Health Organization, obesity has nearly doubled in the last three decades. In the United States, obesity has tripled in children since the 1970s and continues to rise. Based on report estimates by the Center for Disease Control & Prevention, one in five children of standard school age are obese.

Cannabis As A Lifestyle

Research conducted by San Francisco-based cannabis delivery platform Eaze found an increasing crossover between cannabis use and off-the-couch activities including work, fitness and intimacy, reported Adweek.

“It may sound counterintuitive, but cannabis for responsible adults does exist,” said Elizabeth Ashford, vice president of communications at Eaze. “We’re seeing the integration of cannabis into parts of life where we previously didn’t see it. It’s not about waking up and hitting a bong,” Ashford told Adweek. “Some people may take a 2-milligram Sativa edible like someone else would drink espresso in the morning.”

Walking is an activity that provides plenty of health benefits. According to some new evidence, when done right after a meal, the activity can help diabetics and can even prevent the appearance of type 2 diabetes.

Published in the journal Sports Medicine, the study was a meta-analysis of seven different studies. It found that walking had a direct impact on people’s insulin and blood sugar levels, thus impacting the risk of diabetes.

While the studies had different participants and parameters, they tracked people’s responses after sitting, standing up, walking, and more throughout the day. In five of the studies, participants didn’t have diabetes or pre-diabetes, while in the other two they were accounted for.

Those who walked right after consuming meals saw gradual changes in their blood sugar levels. When these walks were committed within 60 to 90 minutes after a meal, results were even stronger and better for all involved. Results showed that benefits were reaped even after walking for 1 or 2 minutes after a meal, showing that everyone has control over this part of their diet and can complete a brief walk whether they’re in the office or at home.

These results are particularly important for diabetics, who must prevent sudden spikes in their blood levels. Still, they’re also beneficial to healthy adults, since these sudden changes can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Aside from helping diabetics and those who are at higher risk for the disease, walks have been linked with a variety of positive behaviors, including maintaining your weight, improving your mood and energy levels, and positively affecting your cardiovascular health, which is the number 1 cause of death in the country.
