Feds again delay requirement for hemp to be tested at DEA-licensed labs

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has again extended a deadline for federally approved hemp to be tested at Drug Enforcement Administration-licensed labs.

Now, hemp produced under the USDA’s Domestic Hemp Production Program can have products tested at labs that aren’t certified by the DEA through the end of 2025, according to a Thursday news release.

The USDA delayed the requirement last year, pushing a planned Dec. 31, 2023, deadline to the end of 2024.

Testing laboratories apparently are having difficulty meeting DEA requirements or receiving certification from the agency, according to feedback the USDA has received from state and tribal governments as well as labs themselves.

Massachusetts regulators unveil plans for marijuana consumption spaces, licensing

Massachusetts regulators are crafting rules and regulations for marijuana consumption spaces and plan to complete the process by mid-2025.

The state’s Cannabis Control Commission (CCC) recently unveiled several potential business enterprises, including Amsterdam-style cafes, tasting rooms and marijuana-friendly special events, according to Boston TV station WHDH.

The proposals are expected to be released next week and then go through an informal comment period for a full month when businesses, advocates and others will have an opportunity to weigh in.

The CCC then will update regulations to reflect the commentary and ultimately hold a public hearing, followed by a formal public comment period, the Boston Herald reported.

Canadian cannabis operator Organigram acquires Motif Labs’ house of brands

Organigram Holdings – a Canadian cannabis licensed producer with operations in Moncton, New  Brunswick, Lac-Supérior, Quebec, and Winnipeg, Manitoba – acquired Motif Labs for 90 million Canadian dollars ($63.6 million), according to a news release.

Motif Labs, based in Aylmer, Ontario, produces cannabis concentrates, extracts, topicals and vapes.

The company’s Boxhot line of cannabis vape products is Canada’s No. 1-selling brand in the vape category for 2024, according to Seattle-based cannabis data firm Headset.

Other Motif brands include Boondocks, Debunk, Floe State and Rizzlers.

Organigram paid CA$50 million ($35.3 million) in cash and CA$40 million in Organigram shares to acquire 100% of the issued and outstanding shares of Motif Labs.

Best of MJBiz Awards include Hall of Fame inductee Nancy Whiteman

MJBiz on Friday inducted the newest member to its Hall of Fame and honored three companies during the Best of MJBiz Awards ceremony at The Hub section of the exhibit floor at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Nancy Whiteman, founder of Boulder, Colorado-based infused edibles manufacturer Wana Brands, is the third member of the MJBiz Hall of Fame, an honor introduced at MJBizCon 2019 and revived this year during MJBizCon Week.
