Minnesota Lawmakers Approve Marijuana Legalization Bill In Another House Committee, With First Senate Hearing Set This Week

Published

A third Minnesota House committee has approved a recently filed bill to legalize marijuana in the state, with another panel already set to take it up on Thursday.

The House Environment and Natural Resources Finance and Policy Committee passed the legislation from Rep. Zack Stephenson (D) in a voice vote on Tuesday. It still has several more committee stops before potentially advancing to the floor.

Members of the House Judiciary Finance and Civil Law Committee approved the measure last week, which followed its initial advancement through the House Commerce Finance and Policy Committee. On the Senate side, companion legislation being sponsored by Sen. Lindsey Port (D) is scheduled for its first hearing in that chamber on Wednesday.

“As I’ve said in other committees, Minnesotans are ready. This is the year that we should legalize adult-use cannabis in the state of Minnesota,” Stephenson said in opening remarks on Tuesday. “Minnesotans deserve the freedom and respect to make their own decisions about cannabis, and we also need to recognize that our current laws are doing more harm than good.”

With majorities in both the House and Senate and control over the governorship this session, Democratic-Farmer-Labor party officials are confident that legalization will be

Virginia Senators Approve Bill To Reschedule Psilocybin And Create Board To Study Therapeutic Access

Published

Virginia senators have approved a bill in committee to establish a statewide psilocybin advisory board and move the psychedelic to a lower schedule under state statute.

The legislation from Sen. Ghazala Hashmi (D) passed in the Senate Education and Health Subcommittee on Health Professions in a 6-1 vote on Friday morning.

This comes about a week after a separate Virginia House of Delegates panel rejected a measure to legalize psilocybin for therapeutic use for people with serious conditions who obtain a doctor’s recommendation.

Hashmi’s legislation, which now heads to the full committee for consideration, is more narrowly tailored than a proposal she filed last session to decriminalize psilocybin altogether.

Instead, it would reclassify psilocybin from Schedule I to Schedule III under state law and establish a Virginia Psilocybin Advisory Board.

Hashmi said in opening remarks on Friday that this reform would help inform future steps to provide alternative treatment options for people whose “medications are not really assisting them,” while “helping them to take care of their critical needs” with psilocybin.

Massachusetts Recreational Marijuana Sales Have Officially Exceeded $4 Billion, State Regulators Announce

Massachusetts adult-use marijuana sales have officially exceeded $4 billion since the state’s market launched in late 2018, regulators announced on Friday.

As of January 12, the state saw $4,000,732,608 in gross cannabis sales, according to data from the Cannabis Control Commission (CCC). This comes less than a year after Massachusetts hit the $3 billion mark, demonstrating continued growth in the industry.

The state currently has 265 retailers and 14 delivery services operating, and regulators track and publish data on sales through the commission’s Open Data Platform. In 2022 alone, the state sold $1,483,898,510 worth of marijuana.

That portal also shows separately that medical cannabis sales are positioned to reach $1 billion during the November 2018-January 2023 timeline, with the total purchase value currently at $975.4 million. Medical cannabis has been available in Massachusetts for longer than recreational, but regulators’ public data tracks both programs on the adult-use timeline.

“Consumers’ demand for tested, quality cannabis products remains strong since Massachusetts became the first East Coast state to open adult-use stores in 2018 and delivery service in 2021,” CCC Executive Director Shawn Collins said in a press release. “As new jurisdictions come online, I

Americans Want Marijuana Less Strictly Regulated While Backing Tighter Rules On Teslas, Crypto And Twitter, Poll Finds

Americans say that marijuana should be less strictly regulated than it is now, while also favoring greater regulations on cryptocurrencies, social media, electric vehicles and coal, according to a new poll.

The Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll surveyed voters about a wide range of national issues, including where they stand on federal regulations for eight consumer products. For each item, they were asked if they felt the federal government should regulate them more or less, or keep regulations at the current level.

A 45 percent plurality of respondents said that there should be fewer regulations for cannabis, while 22 percent said the rules should stay the same and 33 percent said there should be more regulations. Voters were more likely to say marijuana should be less regulated compared to any of the other items included in the survey.

The only thing that people were less likely to say should be more regulated than cannabis was gas stoves.

The poll, which involved interviews with 2,050 registered voters from January 18-19, speaks to a growing consensus that the status quo of prohibition is not working.

That perspective was also represented in another recent survey from Data for Progress that found
