Canadian wildfire smoke triggers poor air quality, health advisories in Colorado

Published

on

Haze blanketed Colorado on Monday as wildfire smoke drifted from Canada, and the gray skies are expected to hover overhead for at least another 24 hours.

The wildfire smoke led the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the Regional Air Quality Council on Monday to issue public health advisories, recommending people limit outdoor activity. The smoke is increasing the amount of ozone and fine particulate matter in the air.

Air monitors across northern Colorado and the Front Range were showing high concentrations of particulate matter, which can be smoke, soot, ash or liquid particles that people can inhale.

Is Your Vape In Danger

Published

They have become very popular for smoking – especially marijuana, but are vapes in danger now?

Is your vape in danger? It has become an increasingly popular method of consuming cannabis along with e-cigrettes. It has become a popular alternative to traditional smoking. E-cigarette technology has been adapted for marijuana use, allowing users to vaporize cannabis concentrates or flower without combustion. This trend has led to a shift in consumer demand, with some marijuana dispensaries reporting that roughly 50% of their business now comes from concentrates and extracts, many of which are packaged in cartridges for use in vape pens. But now, the new tariff policies have far-reaching consequences, including potential impacts on the vaping industry.

In 2022, approximately 4.5% of American adults used e-cigarettes, while 5.8% of Canadians vaped in the past 30 days. It trends was higher among men (6.5%) than women. While some products are reusable, while others are disposable, which means a high turn over for the product.  China has established itself as the global leader in marijuana vape production, dominating the market with its vast manufacturing capabilities and technological innovations.

Fast forward to 2025, and the current administration’s tariff strategy has significantly expanded. It is implementing a 25% tax on imports from Canada and Mexico. These actions have sparked retaliatory measures from trading partners, raising concerns about inflation and the potential for a severe trade war.

The economic impact of these tariffs has been substantial. Estimates suggest 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico could reduce long-run GDP by 0.2% and eliminate 223,000 full-time equivalent jobs The combined effect of tariffs on Mexico, China, and Canada is expected to increase federal tax revenue by $142 billion in 2025, translating to an average tax increase of $1,072 per U.S. household.

For the vaping industry, which relies heavily on Chinese-made devices, these tariffs pose a significant challenge. Small business owners who sell e-cigarettes or are a mom and pop marijuana dispensary face the prospect of increased costs and potential shop closures. Customers mentally have a limit on products. The lack of alternative manufacturing sources for vaping products makes the industry particularly vulnerable to these trade policies.

Does Your Dog Really Care When You Are Sad

Published

on

By

They are more popular than dating apps and are consider a best friend – but are they really there when you need them emotionally?

They are man’s best friend with 38% of Canadians and roughly 50% of Americans having a dog. In the US more men have dogs and in Canada more woman have the furry companion.  While they are fun, loving and play, does your dog really care when you are sad? Dogs have long been known as loyal companions, but recent research suggests that their emotional intelligence may run deeper than mere companionship; they can actually empathize with their owners’ feelings, particularly during times of distress.

RELATED: Can Pets Use Medical Marijuana or CBD

A study published in the journal Learning & Behavior explored how dogs respond to their owners’ emotional states. Researchers found that dogs not only recognize when their owners are upset but also take action to provide comfort. In the experiment, 34 dog-owner pairs were observed in a controlled setting where owners either cried or hummed a cheerful tune. The results showed that while the dogs opened a door to reach their owners at similar rates, those who heard crying did so significantly faster—averaging just 23 seconds compared to 96 seconds for the humming group. This indicates that dogs are more inclined to respond quickly when they perceive their owner is in distress.

Interestingly, the study also noted physiological responses in dogs when their owners cried. Dogs that opened the door displayed lower stress levels than those who did not, suggesting that while they were affected by the owner’s crying, they were not overwhelmed by it. Conversely, dogs  who showed high levels of stress likely cared deeply but were too anxious to act. This highlights a range of emotional responses among dogs, similar to human reactions.

The bond between dogs and their owners plays a crucial role in these empathetic behaviors. Dogs with stronger attachments to their owners exhibited quicker responses to distress signals. This bond is essential as it fosters a mutual understanding of emotions, allowing dogs to act on their instincts to comfort their human companions. As research continues to unfold, it becomes increasingly clear that our canine companions are not just pets; they are emotionally attuned partners capable of providing significant comfort during our most challenging moments.
