Chronic pain has a more common ailment than depression, diabetes and more.
Chronic pain has become common but cannabis can help. A recent study revealed chronic pain is as common or more than diabetes, depression, high blood pressure and more. The exhaustive study discovered 52 new cases of chronic pain per 1,000 people. It is higher than the rate for high blood pressure (45 new cases per 1,000) and far higher than the rates of new depression and diabetes cases.
Roughly 50+ million American and Canadian suffer from chronic pain. The study found people ages 50 and were at higher risk of chronic pain. However, around 10% of adults who reported chronic pain in 2019 said they were pain-free in 2020.
Chronic pain is pain lasting over three months. The pain can be there all the time, or it may come and go. It interferes with daily activities including working, basic function like dressing or cooking, and your social life. It can lead to depression, anxiety and trouble sleeping, which can make the pain worse.
Common chronic pain includes:
Arthritis, or joint pain.
Back pain.
Neck pain.
Cancer pain near a tumor.
Headaches, including migraines.
Testicular pain (orchialgia).
Lasting pain in scar tissue.
Muscle pain all over (such as with fibromyalgia).
The way cannabis helps is due to the peripheral nerves, which detect pain sensations, contain abundant receptors for cannabinoids. Cannabinoids in the correct dosage can block peripheral nerve pain. And basic studies suggest opiates and cannabinoids suppress pain through different mechanisms. This means cannabis, which is not nearly as addictive as opiates, can provide a safer option.
For those suffering from chronic pain, it is important to have a conversation with you medical provider. Cannabis can be a less addictive option if taken in the correct amount and frequency. Microdosing has become common to manage anxiety and could be a solution for pain. Roughly 10% of people recover from chronic pain, so it is important to find a solid pathway to a functional life.
Affecting 40+ million adults each year in the US and Canada, it can be rough. Unfortunately, it can emerge slowly, making it hard to recognize it. Almost 60% of those with it do not seek help, but cannabis can help. With the right dosage and with a health professional’s guidance, life can be better.
If you have any of these symptoms, you should seek medical health. There are treatments, and cannabis is among the tools to help. Some studies have even found small marijuana doses (microdosing) can be better for patients with specific ailments, and large doses can exacerbate the very symptoms cannabis has been prescribed to treat.
A Canadian study found THC, one of the main compounds in marijuana which produces the euphoric effect, is an effective anti-depressant at low doses. Since cannabis strains have different amounts of THC and a number of physiological factors, such as how much a person consumes, can affect how it affects the brain.
The researchers noted: “Because controlling the dosage of natural cannabis is difficult – particularly when it is smoked in the form of marijuana joints – there are perils associated with using it directly as an antidepressant.”
Many situations can contribute to depression, including diet, heredity and stress. Researchers at the University of Buffalo, in another study, found THC reduced chronic stress levels. Samir Haj-Dahmane, PhD., said:
“Chronic stress is one of the major causes of depression. … Using compounds derived from cannabis — marijuana — to restore normal endocannabinoid function could potentially help stabilize moods and ease depression.”
More research and patient information needs to be gathered regarding marijuana and depression. It has been to proven to help chronic pain, inflammation, and other health issues. If you have depression, work with a medical professional to determine treatment options.
In his quest as a foe of legal cannabis and for running a nanny state, will DeSantis allow Floridians to vote for marijuana?
DeSantis is recovering from his failed presidential bid and is working to shore up his reputation in Florida. He is known for being tough, driven and getting things his way. His historic fight with Disney has drawn national attention, but hasn’t fully gone as DeSantis planned. His reputation is bruised and he is stepping up his tactics. He has opposed legal cannabis from the beginning, so will DeSantis let Floridians vote on marijuana?
Currently, DeSantis is using state resources to try to block the Sunshine State citizens from voting on another issues, but what about marijuana? DeSantis, despite receiving campaign donations from a few large cannabis operators, has been adamantly opposed.
When medical marijuana was first put on the ballot, citizens were supportive. It was reasonable considering the amount of veterans and senior citizens in the state. PTSD and chronic pain are two of the ways the American Medical Association, Health and Human Services and science acknowledge cannabis has medical benefits. In general, Florida is in the top 3 states with retirees, a group the Governor thought he can rely on for support, but the state supported medical marijuana by 61%. The governor said it wasn’t enough support, and made them vote again, clearly sharing he did not want it passed. It passed with 71%. Now the state wants to pass recreational marijuana via a ballot initiative and the governor is unhappy.
The pro-marijuana group gained enough signatures and has out raised the opposition $75 million to $14 million. In different current ballot initiative, DeSantis has taken another tack. The other group also gained enough signatures and traction. But in an unprecedented move, the Governor has used state resource to go door to door to ask people if they signed the petition. Also, the governor has also allowed a state agency’s seal to be used in ads against a ballot initiative, a highly usual move.
The GOP Presidential candidate has come out in support of recreational cannabis in Florida, but, so far, it has not swayed DeSantis in his stance. The GOP leader and the governor have a fraught relationship, so it is unclear if it will make a difference in campaign.
