Cocaine Hub Seized by Rebels, Thwarting Colombia’s ‘Total Peace’

The world’s oldest guerrilla movement is close to gaining full control of a cocaine industry heartland in eastern Colombia through a surprise offensive that started just five weeks ago.

The National Liberation Army, or ELN, is closing in on victory in the Catatumbo region near Colombia’s border with Venezuela after breaking a truce last month and slaughtering members of its last remaining major rival in the area, touching off the country’s most intense bout of violence in more than a decade.

The triumph increases the Marxist guerrilla group’s control over the region’s cocaine production, which will bolster its war machine …
