Hands-on the newest Puffco Peak Pro with 3DXL chamber

Published

on

There’s one leading portable electronic hash vaporizer—the Puffco Peak Pro—and it’s maintaining its lead this fall.

Released on the company Puffco’s ten-year anniversary in July, the re-designed Puffco Peak Pro ($420) updates the company’s flagship device, and shows Puffco sailing on into uncharted new waters.

Not the totally revamped model some had been expecting, this Pro represents the new baseline for the marquee product and captures the best “out of the box” experience.

Past buyers of a Puffco Peak would often upgrade to a more heavy-hitting 3D Chamber, and add a custom cap to their hash oven, which is called an atomizer. Now, 2023’s Peak Pro includes both the 3D chamber and an upgraded carb cap as standard equipment. Furthermore, the glass top bubbler has a new five-hole percolator for cooler, bigger hits. Even though the air pathway in the base is the same size, you can notice the increased chug right when you test the water level.

Beyond that, the redesigned base uses a softer, sculpted rubber grip, has a faster vibration,  and your choice of two new finishes: Onyx or Pearl. The Los Angeles-based company also updated the Hot Knife and Travel Pack in Onyx and Pearl.

You can notice the increased chug right when you test the water level.

Working in tandem is that totally redesigned ball cap that’s been dubbed “The Joystick” for its resemblance to a handheld controller. Gone is the single-carb glass, replaced with a metal, four-carb post that sits firmly in a rubber grommet. The improved seal is tight enough to prevent oil from splashing up, but you can still take it apart for deep cleaning.

In August, Puffco debuted the 3DXL chamber ($125)—a 78% bigger electronic oven for your hash that results in massive rips. Alongside a deeper chamber and a straw-like joystick cap, the 3DXL also unlocks a new vapor setting for the Puffco app on your smartphone—a new, super-chug mode that easily provides double the vapor of a non-upgraded Peak Pro. Longtime fans will also notice the deeper chamber prevents spillover from entering the device’s internal vapor path and damaging the device.

Mostly, the unit functions like a Peak Pro. New firmware along with the 3D chamber gives all users access to the “disco mode” heating update. There’s also a new, in-app vapor adjustment option to let you customize the output for each heating setting.

According to Puffco, vapor control “uses a precise formula to maximize the amount of energy transferred into the bowl prior to dabbing. This added energy—in the form of heat—creates more potential surface area for vaporization.”

Along with more customizable heating controls, the Onyx and Pearl also have a new inhale function that cues a personalized light show as you take your hit.

Is the latest Peak Pro version worth it?

For anyone who owns a current Peak Pro, it’s the percolating glass and joystick where you’ll feel the most FOMO. These items make the Puffco Peak push huge clouds. For this crowd, the choice to switch is a lot like having an iPhone 14 when the iPhone 15 comes out.

But those getting their first-ever Peak Pro will want to make sure to splurge on this new $420 package, over the now reduced “basic” model. It’ll save you time trying to figure out how to upgrade the basic unit.  The $125 price tag on the 3DXL atomizer—while $50 dollars more than the already upgraded one that comes with this new Peak Pro model—is worth the money for fans who are chasing the biggest possible clouds, or like taking those big globs.

The Onyx and Pearl, the new 3DXL atomizers—plus the new Proxy Travel Bag—give fans the latest in Puffco’s accessories, app features, and appearance, just in time for their yearly Puffcon celebration happening September 30 in downtown LA.

Get there early, since Puffco has a pop-up store at the event where you can find screaming deals and often special early drops on the newest gear.

Puffco refines the dab pen with new Pivot

Published

on

By

Vaping hash keeps getting cooler—now with the Puffco brand “Pivot.” This ‘dab pen’ is about the size of a magic marker, but delivers massive hash vapor clouds. Read on as writer Jimi Devine digs in.

The Puffco Peak hash vape bubbler gets the credit for taking us out of the Dark Ages of digital dabs. But Puffco had already taken over the dab pen market in the years prior.

When its first offering—the Puffco Pro—hit the market in 2013, the wind was instantly in Puffco’s sails. The Puffco Pro was a vape pen designed for concentrates and featured advanced technology that delivered a cleaner, more flavorful experience than anything the marketplace had ever seen. Its ease of use and quality took Puffco to the mountaintop seemingly overnight.

You would have been hard-pressed to find someone who owned a hash company without a personal collection of Puffco products by 2014. They were a must for dabbing discretely virtually anywhere. A few years later, the electronic hash bubbler dubbed the Peak dropped and made its mark on history, taking Puffco into over 30 countries in the time since.

But while the Peak and Peak Pro are awesome, the new Pivot feels a lot more like an homage to Puffco’s original products with its sleek and discreet design paired with its function.

“It has always been a goal of ours at Puffco to normalize concentrates in a way that removes the fear that new consumers may have,” said Roger Volodarsky, CEO and Founder of Puffco. “I can confidently say that our devices have led to an increased curiosity around dabs, allowing new consumers an avenue to explore new forms of cannabis consumption in a user-friendly way. The Pivot will only expand on that.”

Puffco’s ‘3D Chamber’ is key

The Pivot is built around the workhorse of Puffco’s lineup, the 3D Chamber. Since its inception, the 3D chamber has been considered the height of atomizer quality and durability. Since it was first created, Puffco has built every new device around the tech. It’s paid off, few companies have been able to scrape out any market share in recent years.

The Pivot is also built with the smallest 3D chamber ever.

The argument is that since it is the same tech that is in the larger offerings from Puffco, the quality of the experience will be identical, just a little bit smaller.

The Pivot is also the most affordable product with a 3D Chamber to date—with a MSRP of $130.

The Pivot is arguably the biggest dab pen launch in the eight years since Puffco released the Puffco Plus. The retractable scooper underneath the the mouthpiece—the Dab Dart—were all the rage with that one in addition to some other hardware upgrades from the original Puffco Pro launch three years prior.

Now eleven years since that first pen, the Pivot has a variety of features that live up to Puffco’s standards of innovation. In addition to the miniature 3D Chamber, the pivot sports an angled mouthpiece. This allows the hash to pool more easily on the bottom of the chamber where the real magic happens while maximizing air and vapor flow.

The battery is pretty solid too. Puffco says you should be able to get about 15 rips on a charge. The Pivot also simplifies USB charging compared to back in the day when you needed an adapter for the original Puffco pens.

The quick snap-on 3D chambers are also available in two-packs for $60. You can load them up like ammo, so your dabs are pre-packed for easy swapping on on the go.

And you know Puffco isn’t sending a new product out without accessories. You can hit the Pivot on your dab rig with a $60 adapter. Puffco also debuts a Travel Case available to keep your dabs and pivot organized on the go.

The Pivot goes on sale to the general public on Friday.

US hash buyer’s guide to 710 Oil Day 2024

Published

It’s a pretty epic time to be into hash—the concentrated form of cannabis.

With 24 legalization states and climbing, hash diversity has bloomed, and so have the different price points. The top-shelf, California State Fair gold medal-winning stuff can cost more than $100 a gram after taxes. On the low end, $7 wax grams keep the working man elevated.

Thanks to the golden age of strains, hash can taste like papaya, honey, and even hamburger. Hash-infused joints are surging in popularity, and solvent-free live rosin is sweeping the country.

This “Oil Day” (aka “710,” July 10) Leafly launched seven shoppable hash categories. Now you can search by types: Live badder & THC budder dabs, hash and bubble hash, live resin dabs, Rick Simpson Oil, live rosin dabs, shatter, and wax.

After you take a spin, here’s some hashes we’d love to taste.

California

In hash news around California, a 710 Hash Tour pops up around the state, while an SF Hash Week drenches San Francisco in terps. Airo vapes re-launches in California with four tiers including a solventless line. Ember Valley and Raw Garden both re-launch live rosin lines. Here’s some picks.

HolyWater live rosin split jars Trop Cherries / Habibi

Emerald Cup-winning outfit HolyWater brings out one jar with two separate dabs in it—so-called split jars of live rosin. Try the Trop Cherries, and then the Habbibi strain—and then both together for a terpy journey. See also: HolyWater hash holes.

Whether it’s rockets that land themselves, miraculous medical breakthroughs, or Beyonce—America stays winning no matter how much the haters hate.

On the country’s 248th birthday, those wins extend to cannabis freedoms as well. Stoners worldwide envy our 24 full legalization states and new ones in the pipeline. Ohio’s first legal sales occur this June. Floridians get to vote to end prohibition this November. Pennsylvania, Hawaii, and the Dakotas are fighting for weed freedoms. The country’s 40 million or so past-month weed smokers have more potent, pure, new flavors and modes of cannabis to choose from than ever in 2024 from Washington state to the beaches of Miami.

July 4th has become the third biggest sales period in the year, after 4/20 and the pre-Christmas stock-up. You need pre-rolls for popping out of the club. You need all-in-one vape pens to sneak a toke while camping with the cousins. You need edibles to rest up after way too much fun.

America’s fine dispensaries stand ready to serve. We surveyed the landscape for new flavors and certified classics to enjoy from 12 legal states. Jump down to picks for your area.

Evermore Concentrations

These live resin vape carts from Baltimore-based Evermore bring together a hybrid of (Mimosa x Wedding Cake) for daytime fun. This strain hits the palate much like an orange upside-down cake with a confectionary front end and an orange tang lingering note. Rosin carts are nice, but this butane extract has great flavor, full stop. If you like California’s Holy Water or Coldfire Juice, you will be pleased with these options right in their backyard.  The cart has 5.6% CBG for an anti-inflammatory effect. The label also boasts a staggering 9.1% terpenes, with a lot of β-Caryophyllene, Limonene, and β-Myrcene. It makes for a euphoric vibe that hits right in the eyes with a regular dose of puffs. The complete experience of ordering this cart through RISE Bethesda’s delivery service, throwing it on the battery, and feeling the energetic buzz was so seamless, that it’s an easy recommendation for the types of busy patients who would benefit most.
