Cannabis plants worth more than £2 million have been seized from a basement drugs farm in Leicester city centre. Two men have been jailed after police discovered what they described as a large growing operation.

The Illicit operation was discovered when police executed a warrant at a building in St James Street on Monday, November 11, Leicestershire Police said. Officers from Central NPT and Neighbourhood Teams found the operation in the city property.

Two men were subsequently charged with production of cannabis and appeared before magistrates. Both later admitted their involvement in the operation.

Milaim Karanca, 21, and Meti Trapozani, 29, both of James Street, Leicester, were sentenced at Leicester Crown Court on Friday, February 7. Karanca was jailed for 26 months while Trapozani received a 20-month prison sentence.

Police said the drugs had an estimated street value exceeding £2 million. The operation was discovered following the execution of a Misuse of Drugs Act warrant.

Sergeant Joseph Culverwell from Central NPT said: “These two men operated a very large and active cannabis farm. The proactive action we took disrupted the supply of these drugs, drugs which have a destructive impact on the local community.”

He added: “We will not tolerate drugs on our streets, and we will continue to act on information received and to bring those responsible for drug offending before the courts. If you have any information about drug offending in your community, please do report it to us so that we can take the action needed.”
