The BEST Delicious Whiskey Cocktails You Can Make

Whiskey is one of my favorite things. I’ll go to lengths to describe the way it makes me feel and especially the way it performs in craft cocktails. What? Whiskey cocktails? Don’t look away; it’s perfectly acceptable to mix cocktails with whiskey. By the way, if you’ve enjoyed a whiskey smash or a mint julep, you’ve had a whiskey cocktail. And if you’ve treated your glass of whiskey to a splash of soda or a muddle of fruit, that is a cocktail too.

Yup, your world just got a bit bigger and you haven’t event gotten to the Manhattan’s or the Rob Roy Cocktails yet!

One such creative cocktail from my recently published book, The Craft Cocktail Compendium is named “A Pleasant Little Gentleman.” It takes a bit of rye whiskey, raw honey simple syrup and whiskey barrel aged bitters and twists them up a bit.

A Pleasant Little Gentleman

  • 2 oz. Fernet Branca
  • 1 oz. rye whiskey
  • 1 oz. raw honey simple syrup (1 cup raw honey to 1 cup hot, but not boiling, water)
  • 2-4 shakes Barrel Aged Bitters
  • Boiling water for hot tea (Lapsang Souchong)

Boil tea. Add the liquors. Sweeten with raw honey to taste. Add the bitters. Serve

Another little taste of deliciousness is the “Late Summer Fizz.” It includes Pimm’s Cup. Now you know what to do with this cucumber-scented slice of heaven.

Late Summer Fizz

(Pg. 110 of The Craft Cocktail Compendium)

  • 2 oz. rye
  • ½ oz. Pimm’s No.1. Cup
  • ½ oz. apple cider
  • ½ oz. sweet white vermouth (I used Carpano Antica Formula)
  • ¼ oz. allspice dram
  • Sprinkle of sea salt
  • Lemon bitters
  • Splash of club soda

To a Boston Shaker filled ¾ with ice: Add the liquors and the apple cider. Add the dram. Cap and shake hard for 15 seconds. Pour over fresh ice in a rocks glass. Splash club soda. Dot with lemon bitters. Sprinkle sea salt over the top. Serve.

The next one is my take on the classic Old Fashioned. It involves roasted fruit that you split, add light balsamic vinegar or apple cider vinegar and Demerara sugar, roasted, cooled and muddled. Pretty spectacular.

Grilled Peach and Thai Basil Roast

  • 1 oz. roasted peaches (split, sprinkled with sugar and 1 tsp balsamic and roasted for 1 hour at 350 degrees until soft and charred)
  • 1 oz. roasted oranges (split, sprinkled with sugar and 1 tsp balsamic and roasted for 1 hour at 350 degrees until soft and charred
  • 4 oz. bourbon whiskey
  • 1-2 sprigs Thai basil

Muddle the roasted peaches and oranges with Thai basil very lightly, just to release the aromatics adding a bit of bourbon along the way, muddle some more and add more bourbon (I used Barrell Bourbon Batch 11). Strain the mixture into a rocks glass without ice or if you want, with one large cube of ice and a bit of the muddling mixture. Garnish with a sprig of Thai basil.

How can you go through summer without a take on the Moscow Mule, but with whiskey instead of vodka? This one takes a bit of a different tack. It involves making a very quick Shrub — no, not a shrubbery, but a little concoction that adds a bit of apple cider vinegar to the usual ginger beer. Kind of a ginger snap in your mouth!

Son In The Foreign Legion

  • ¼ oz. apple cider vinegar
  • 3 oz. ginger beer (cane sugar-based)
  • 2 oz. blended Scotch whiskey (Like Johnny Walker Red)
  • 4-6 drops Angostura bitters (or like)

To a cocktail mixing glass: Fill ¾ with ice. Add the whiskey. Add the ginger beer. Add the apple cider vinegar. Stir well to chill but not dilute. Pour into 2 coupe glasses. Dot with bitters and serve.

The last cocktail is also from my book The Craft Cocktail Compendium. It is simply named “Bill Monroe’s Country Cooler,” paying homage to the master mandolin player himself.

Bill Monroe’s Country Cooler

  • 1 oz. peach nectar
  • 1 oz. apricot nectar
  • ½ oz. freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 oz. sweet iced tea (sugar to your own taste of course!)
  • 2-4 oz. white (un-aged) whiskey
  • 2-5 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Fresh mint (picked in the shadow of the roots of an ancient oak tree, where sweet branch water bubbles forth in a belly laugh)

Add all the liquid ingredients to a cocktail mixing vessel filled ¾ with ice. Stir well to chill. Strain into ball jars. Dot with bitters. Slap the mint against your palm and garnish. Serve and quickly prepare more! They go down quick!

Here is a way to settle into a cozy beverage which will warm your body and soul. Bourbon has been part of the holidays for generations…and you can make this a new tradition.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon
  • 1/2 oz simple syrup
  • 2 dashes bitters
  • 2 dashes orange juice
  • Garnish: cinnamon stick and orange peel

Create

  • Combine ingredients in a mixing glass and add ice

  • Stir for 20 seconds

  • Strain into a rocks glass with ice

  • Garnish with orange peel and a cinnamon stick

White Bishop

Easy, Tasty Egg Nog

You either you love it or hate it, but Egg Nog is a holiday staple. This recipe makes it lighter, tasty and a wee dangerous since it is so good. It bring a whole new take on a staid drink.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz store bought egg nog
  • 1 oz milk (2% is the best)
  • small splash vanilla
  • 1 oz Licor 43

Create

  1. Combine egg nog, milk and vanilla
  2. Stir until well mixed
  3. Add Licor 43 and stir again
  4. Pour into a fun glass and enjoy

White Bishop

The Bishop’s Wife is a great holiday movie filled with the Christmas spirit and some never ending booze. This drink is an embraces the fun, warmth, snow, and spirit of the evening.  Perfect as a dessert drink, a morning treat or just to lift your holiday mood.

  • 2 oz vanilla vodka
  • 1 oz heavy cream
  • 1 oz Frangelico or Licor 43
  • Small splash of vanilla

Create

  1. Combine all ingredients in shaker with ice
  2. Shake for 20 seconds
  3. Strain into a martini glass

The Best Holiday Whiskey Cocktails

At this year, every one wants to indulge a bit – here are some fun cocktails to make the season merry and bright

Whiskey is the most popular liquor in most US states, and sales increased 9.4% in 2022 compared to 2020.  Monks help introduce the world to whiskey over 1000 year ago after. What not blend this booze in the best holiday whiskey cocktails?  It is a crowd pleaser.

Whiskey is a general term for a distilled, barrel-aged spirit made from fermented grains, while bourbon is a type of whiskey that meets specific requirements. It is made from a mashbill that’s at least 51% corn, while whiskey can be made from a blend of grains like corn, rye, barley, or wheat. The corn in bourbon gives it a distinctive sweet flavor. It must be aged in new, charred oak barrels, while other whiskeys can be aged in a variety of barrels, including those previously used for other spirits.  It cannot contain any additives or colorings. Bourbon is primarily produced in Kentucky, though it can be made anywhere in the world. To be designated “straight bourbon whiskey,” bourbon must be aged in new charred oak barrels for at least two years.

A Slushy Bourbon Milk Punch

A holiday favorite, it is a similar to a rich, flavorful, creamy milkshake with a kick.

Ingredients

  • 3 parts Whole Milk
  • 2 parts Half and Half
  • 1.5 parts Bourbon
  • 1 part sifted Sugar, Powdered
  • Vanilla extract
  • Fresh Grated Nutmeg
  • Cinnamon Stick

Create

In a pitcher, whisk together milk, half-and-half, bourbon, sugar and vanilla

Freeze until slushy and ready to serve

Stir before serving it in a chilled glass

Finish with a few gratings of fresh nutmeg

Garnish with a cinnamon stick.

Slushy Bourbon Punch

Maple Bourbon Coffee

Seen in the movie Elf, this morning delight it perfect hone hosting holiday guests, prep for tailgating or after a morning of shopping.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups coffee, strongly brewed
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 9 ozs Maple Bourbon
  • Whipped cream
  • Grated cinnamon

Create

  1. Add coffee, milk, vanilla extract and ground cinnamon to a slow cooker
  2. Heat on low for 1 ½ hours
  3. Add in bourbon
  4. Serve in heat safe glasses and top with whipped cream and cinnamon

Christmas Old Fashioned Cocktail

Having some friends over and want to impress them? What about a pitcher of this festive elixir? It bring some holiday cheer to even the meanest Scrooge.

Ingredients

  • 3 Cranberries
  • 2 oz Whiskey
  • 1 oz Ginger Syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
  • 1 Orange Slice
  • 1 Rosemary Sprig

Create

  1. Crush cranberries in a rocks cocktail glass
  2. Add whiskey, ginger syrup and bitters
  3. Fill glass with ice, garnish with orange slice and rosemary sprig

Cranberry Bourbon Kiss

This is a bend of the rich flavor of bourbon, the fresh feel of citrus, and a dollop of holiday spirit. Enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups bourbon
  • 1 cup sweet vermouth
  • 2 cups orange juice
  • 1 cup unsweetened cranberry juice
  • ½ cup simple syrup

Create

  1. Add the cranberry, orange juice, bourbon, vermouth, simple syrup to a cocktail shaker
  2. Add 1 handful ice then shake until cold
  3. Pour into a lowball glass over ice or serve up in a martini glass
  4. Garnish with fresh or frozen cranberries.

Cocktails, beers, vapes, and gummies are all staples of social gathers – but is the cocktails or the vape better?

Alcohol has long consistent hold on society. Having been part of India, the Middle East and more, it has played a part in medicine, religion, intimacy and recreation for thousands of year. Yet alcohol has become the modern accepted intoxicant.  But is an old fashioned or a gummy healthier in today’s world?  Moderation is the key for both, but science comes down clearly on one side.

Cannabis and alcohol are two of the most widely used recreational substances, but their health impacts differ significantly. While neither is without risks, research suggests that cannabis may be the healthier option overall when used responsibly.

Alcohol consumption carries substantial health risks, especially with heavy or long-term use. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that excessive alcohol use leads to approximately 88,000 deaths annually in the United States. Alcohol is linked to liver disease, cardiovascular problems, and increased cancer risk. It can also exacerbate mental health issues and contribute to accidents and violence

Cannabis, on the other hand, has a lower risk profile. There have been no reported deaths from marijuana overdose, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration. While smoking cannabis can have negative effects on lung health, alternative consumption methods like gummies, tinctures and oils avoid this risk. Cannabis is also less addictive than alcohol, with about 9% of users becoming dependent compared to 23% for alcohol.

Both substances impair cognitive function and motor skills in the short term. However, alcohol tends to have more severe immediate effects, including the risk of alcohol poisoning. Cannabis typically does not cause the intense hangover effects associated with alcohol use.

Moderate alcohol consumption may have some cardiovascular benefits, according to some studies. However, cannabis has shown promise in pain management and as a potential alternative to more dangerous opioid medications. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that researchers continue to explore.

While both substances carry risks, the available evidence suggests that cannabis is likely the healthier choice when compared to alcohol. It has a lower risk of overdose, less severe long-term health consequences, and potentially more medical applications. However, it’s crucial to note that the healthiest option is always moderation or abstinence from both substances.
