The President of the Republic, Rodrigo Chaves, mistakenly referred to people who consume marijuana in the country as “criminals.” In reality, the self-consumption of cannabis is decriminalized in Costa Rica. The use, possession, cultivation, and transportation of marijuana for personal use are not penalized in the country. This is acknowledged by the Institute on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (IAFA) on its information platform and the Third Chamber of the Judiciary.
