US Hemp Authority offers certification program for intoxicating products

Absent federal regulations for the $28.4 billion market for goods containing intoxicating hemp-derived cannabinoids – and in an era where states are imposing increasingly tough restrictions or outright bans on hemp-derived THC – a major hemp organization has created a certification program for such products.

The U.S. Hemp Authority, a Kentucky-based, third-party certification body for hemp and CBD products, has launched what it calls the Adult Use Hemp Product Certification Program.

The Adult Use program is designed for manufacturers and sellers of products with delta-8 THC and other hemp-derived cannabinoids, the organization said in a Thursday news release.

California marijuana lab official fired for violations, not whistleblowing, state says

California’s marijuana regulatory agency is denying claims that a former top official was fired for highlighting widespread problems at state-licensed testing labs under her supervision, according to court documents obtained by MJBizDaily.

The filing by the state’s Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) in Los Angeles Superior Court countered allegations levied by Tanisha Bogans as to why she was fired as former deputy director of laboratory services at the agency.

Bogans claimed in a September lawsuit that she was fired in January after sharing reports of rampant THC-potency inflation and labs’ deliberate failures to detect pesticides and mold.

Connecticut’s cannabis sales decline 12% in September

Total cannabis sales in Connecticut dropped 12% in September, according to recently released data.

Recreational and medical marijuana sales declined from a $25.6 million in August to $23.4 million in September, according to the state’s Department of Health and Human Services.

Adult-use sales fell 7.6%, from $18 million in August to $16.6 million in September.

Medical marijuana sales dropped 10.9%, from $7.7 million to $6.8 million.

Ben Zachs, owner of recreational and medical marijuana retailer Fine Fettle, said sales were lower than expected.

“Our metrics showed that, just in terms of fundamentals, September should have been a month that was about 8.5% below August,” Zachs told CT Insider.

Massachusetts fines marijuana MSOs Ascend, Curaleaf a combined $165,000

Massachusetts regulators fined New York-based marijuana multistate operators Ascend Wellness Holdings and Curaleaf Holdings a combined $165,000 for neglecting consumer safety practices.

The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission (CCC) fined Ascend $85,000 on Thursday for omitting roughly 900 marijuana products from the state’s required track-and-trace system, The Boston Globe reported.

The allegations, which date as far back as 2021, included failing to seal gaps in doors and ducts as well as workplace deficiencies that led to at least three contaminated cannabis samples.

The CCC fined Curaleaf $80,000 on Thursday for systemic failures limiting contamination from pesticides at its Amesbury and Webster cultivation facilities, according to the Globe.
