You could count on one hand the number of times Sean Payton seemed relaxed in his Friday news conferences last season. Maybe one finger. Like the middle one.

That is what made Friday interesting and further proof of his comfort level with his second Broncos team entering its first game of the season. He entertained questions, both broad and narrow. He cracked a smile, even showing a slice of self-deprecating humor regarding his college study habits.

Payton has found a desirable role straight out of central casting: the underdog. He’s reveling in it. He might as well be wearing Air Buds instead of Air Jordans.

Courtland Sutton on Broncos’ struggles in red zone: “We need to find a way to score touchdowns”

When Bo Nix was asked about the characteristics of a good red zone offense in the NFL, the rookie quarterback didn’t shy away from the truth about his rough experience in critical situations.

“In the NFL, I haven’t figured out a whole lot because we haven’t scored in the red zone, yet,” Nix said after Wednesday’s practice.

Even with former quarterback Russell Wilson across the country in Pittsburgh, Denver’s red zone struggles have remained. In 2023, the Broncos scored a touchdown on 51.7% of their red zone trips, as head coach Sean Payton spent the offseason searching for answers on how to improve the team’s production inside the 20-yard line.

Another Tua scare. New season, same Buffalo domination over division rival Miami. The Bills rolled on Thursday night. The scary part, though, came in the second half when Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa sustained another concussion. He’s had several in his pro career and the latest came when he tried to run through a Damar Hamlin tackle attempt. What’s next for the quarterback with a new five-year, $212.4 million contract extension? Hard to say, but his health certainly should take priority.

Deshaun’s mess. Well, Russell Wilson’s trade and extension in Denver will probably never be the worst in NFL history and the club has Deshaun Watson to thank for it. Watson struggled again in Week 1 and was named in yet another lawsuit related to sexual misconduct. His fully guaranteed contract through 2026 makes him nearly impossible to move on from, but they have to consider it anyway at some point, right?
