A bipartisan coalition has filed legislation to repeal the recently introduced tax

Democrats and Republicans in the Michigan Senate are teaming up on legislation to stop the governor’s plan to fix “damn roads” by making licensed cannabis businesses and consumers pay for it.

A bipartisan coalition of eight senators filed legislation that Senate Bill 810Feb. 26 to repeal Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Comprehensive Road Funding Tax Act. The act, included in the state’s $81 billion budget, implemented a 24% wholesale tax on hemp in early 2026 to raise revenue to repair roads, bridges and other infrastructure throughout Michigan.

This new tax is in addition to the state’s 10% retail cannabis excise tax and 6% sales tax.

Florida Supreme Court Declines Cannabis Campaign’s Appeal To Save 2026 Ballot Bid

Florida Supreme Court on Mondayrejected the appealSmart & Safe Florida to renew signatures in support of legalizing cannabis in 2026.

The signatures in question, about 70,000, were disqualified by Florida Secretary of State Cord Byrd under new rules lawmakers approved last year that made it more difficult to gather signatures for ballot initiatives in the state. The company sued to overturn the rules, but an appeals court ruled in favor of the state.

The appeal was the company’s last attempt to pass this year’s vote — the court alreadyoral arguments waivedon the matter last month after the state announced the campaigndidn’t make itqualification threshold for voting. With the appeal rejected, the campaign’s last chance to get on the ballot in November has passed.

How Emergency Regulations Have Put Nebraska’s Medical Cannabis Industry ‘In Limbo’

Nebraska lawmakers have advanced medical cannabis-related legislation for the first time, moving a bill aimed at funding and basic operations of the state’s Medical Cannabis Commission to the next round of discussion.

LB1235 was introduced by the General Affairs Committee on behalf of the Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission at the request of Governor Jim Peelen. In its original form, the bill was designed to help the commission get started, according to committee chairman Sen. Rick Holdcroft.

“It’s providing funding so they can hire staff and get paid, it’ll give them a registry so they can start registering patients and caregivers and medical staff to make referrals, it’ll set up a seed sales program that will track mostly from seed so we can make sure it cuts down on any black markets,” Holdcroft said.

But advocates said the bill initially drew significant opposition because of concerns it would weaken patient protections. Christa Eggers of Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana said that while 75 percent of the feedback was positive, 25 percent were negative and resulted in the removal of patient protections.

“It gives full authority to the medical cannabis commission, and while we would have hoped and would have liked to have a commission that follows the will of the people, that takes into account public comment and public feedback, we haven’t seen that,” Eggers said.
