A Quick Lesson In The Difference In Whiskeys
Sometimes Mondays can be a bit much – so here are some tidbits of humor to make it a bit better.
Whiskey is considered one of the most popular alcoholic beverages globally, with a large market value and consistent consumption across many countries including India, the US, China, Europe and the UK. It is a classic liquor with many faces, be it Malt, Japanese, or Bourbon….here is a quick lesson in the difference in whiskeys.
Before diving into the specifics, it’s worth noting that both “whiskey” and “whisky” are correct spellings. The difference lies in regional preference: American and Irish producers typically use “whiskey,” while Scotland, Canada, and much of Europe prefer “whisky”

Scotch Whisky is produced exclusively in Scotland and is known for its rich history and strict production regulations. It is typically made from malted barley, though some grain Scotch is also produced. The process involves malting, fermentation, distillation, and aging in oak barrels for at least three years. Scotch can be categorized into several types, including Single Malt Scotch, which is made from malted barley at a single distillery, and Blended Scotch, which combines different single malts with grain whisky.
Japanese Whisky is modeled after Scotch traditions but with unique Japanese twists. It is often described as drier, smokier, and peatier than American whiskeys, though not as peaty as some Scotches. Japanese distilleries often import ingredients from Scotland but focus on refining their techniques to produce more delicate flavors. The use of local water sources and unique barrel types, such as those made from mizunara wood, contribute to its distinct taste.
Bourbon Whiskey is an American spirit made primarily from corn mash, with at least 51% corn content. It must be aged in new, charred American white oak barrels, which impart a rich, sweet flavor profile with notes of vanilla and caramel. Bourbon is predominantly produced in Kentucky and can be enjoyed on its own or used in classic cocktails like the Kentucky Mint Julep.
Tennessee Whiskey is a type of bourbon that undergoes an additional step called the Lincoln County Process, where it is filtered through sugar maple charcoal before aging. This process gives Tennessee Whiskey a smoother, sweeter taste compared to traditional bourbon.
Single Malt Whiskey refers to whiskey made from malted barley at a single distillery. While traditionally associated with Scotland, single malts can be produced elsewhere, including the United States and Japan. Single malts are known for their complex, refined flavor profiles, which can include notes of oak, vanilla, fruit, and nuts. The aging process and type of barrels used significantly influence the final taste
Additionally, India is expanding into whiskey and is quickly making an international name for itself. Each type of whiskey offers a unique experience based on its ingredients, production methods, and geographical origins. Whether you prefer the sweetness of bourbon, the smokiness of Scotch, or the elegance of Japanese whisky, there’s a world of flavors to explore in the realm of whiskey.
When it is cold or snowy outside – should you put a coat on your dog?
Here are suggestions for knowing if your dog needs a coat.
Breed and Size: Small or thin-furred breeds, such as Chihuahuas and Greyhounds, often struggle to retain heat in cold conditions. Similarly, slender breeds like Whippets and short-haired dogs like Great Danes may need extra warmth. Breeds of dogs who are generally clipped, like all three sizes of poodles, or individual dogs who have had their coat shaved or clipped, won’t have the natural insulation and protection that a longer coat normally provides. These dogs can become cold quickly when outside and may need coats to stay warm in winter weather.
On the other hand, dogs with thick double coats, such as Huskies and Malamutes, are generally well-insulated against the cold.
Age and Health: Puppies and senior dogs are more susceptible to cold temperatures due to their less efficient body heat regulation. Dogs with chronic health conditions, such as arthritis or hypothyroidism, may also appreciate the warmth a coat provides.
Weather Conditions: Extreme cold, snow, ice, and wind can make a coat necessary for dogs that would otherwise not need one. Waterproof or water-resistant coats are particularly useful in wet condition
When selecting a coat for your dog, consider the following:
Material: Choose materials that provide warmth without overheating, such as wool or fleece. Waterproof fabrics are ideal for wet conditions.
Fit: Ensure the coat fits well to avoid discomfort or restriction of movement. Some dogs can get the most all-over protection from cold weather with a snowsuit or bodysuit. These coats cover your dog’s entire body, including their legs. These bodysuits are especially beneficial for lean-bodied or hairless dogs with longer legs who are susceptible to cold weather.
Comfort: Don’t force your dog to wear a coat if they seem stressed or uncomfortable. Before expecting your dog to be comfortable going outside and playing in a jacket, it’s important to appropriately introduce the jacket to your dog instead of just putting it on and expecting your dog to accept it. By introducing the jacket in advance and making it a positive experience for your dog, you’ll ensure that your dog is comfortable wearing their coat and will be ready to play in the snow and walk in the winter weather with you.

While not all dogs need coats in cold weather, certain breeds, ages, and health conditions can make them a necessity. Always observe your dog’s behavior and adjust their winter routine accordingly. If you’re unsure, consulting with a veterinarian can provide personalized advice tailored to your dog’s specific needs.
Will Texas go the way of Florida with the marijuana of the public wants some form of legal marijuana and the Governor doing all he can to stop it?
While cannabis awaits its future under the new administration, the public increasingly wants legal access to marijuana. Increasing seen as a respected medical aide, the pubic is embracing the green plant, and are increasingly open to fully legalized weed. Now Texas citizens want legalized cannabis but, will they go the way of Florida and have the governor stop the efforts? Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis used the full force available to him to try to stop the movement. But the Sunshine State public won medical marijuana and will gain full recreational at some point. Now Lone Star state Governor Greg Abbott, could be in for a similar battle.

he most recent survey, released in February 2025, shows that nearly four out of five Texans (79%) support establishing a full-fledged medical cannabis program. This level of support is consistent across various demographic groups, with every socio-demographic subgroup favoring reform. The strong backing for medical marijuana is likely driven by its perceived health benefits and the desire to provide relief to patients with qualifying conditions. Currently, Texas’s Compassionate Use Program is highly restrictive, allowing only low-THC cannabis for a limited number of conditions.
In addition to medical marijuana, there is significant support for decriminalizing cannabis possession. About 69% of Texans endorse legislation to decriminalize marijuana for those 21 years and older, which would reduce penalties for possession to fines rather than criminal charges. Furthermore, 62% of Texans support legalizing a commercial marketplace for adult-use cannabis sales, indicating a growing acceptance of recreational use.
The support for marijuana legalization crosses political lines, with a majority of Democrats and a significant portion of Republicans backing these reforms. While Democrats are more likely to support full legalization, Republicans also show substantial support, particularly for medical use. Nonreligious Texans and those with lower incomes or without college degrees are more likely to favor decriminalization and legalization.
Despite the strong public support, Texas lawmakers have been slow to act on these issues. The state’s legislative structure, which meets only in odd-numbered years, limits opportunities for reform. Additionally, Texas does not allow statewide citizen-initiated ballot measures, placing the onus on elected officials to drive change. Recent efforts by Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick to ban THC products further complicate the path to legalization. So it will be the Governor to determine the ultimate path forward.
