PharmaCann Closing Pennsylvania Cannabis Facility, Laying Off 60 More Workers

PharmaCann Inc. will permanently close its hemp growing and processing facility near Oliphant, Pa., laying off 60 workers on May 20 after the multistate, privately held operator defaulted on lease obligations.

CompanysubmittedWorker Adjustment and Retraining Notice (WARN) to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry on March 20, informing the department of the closure of its facility at 111 Life Science Drive in Scott Township.

PharmaCann was founded in 2014purchased18 acres of land in Lackawanna County — in the northeast region of the commonwealth — in late 2018, with plans to build a 36,000-square-foot facility to serve Pennsylvania’s promising medical cannabis market, which began sales earlier that year.

At the time, Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce President Bob Durkin said PharmaCann was among companies “at the cutting edge of their industries” that fit Scott Technology Park’s long-standing industrial zoning goals.

Is Connecticut In A Cannabis ‘Arms Race’ With Massachusetts?

Governor Ned Lamont and leaders of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe sign Connecticut’s first tribal state cannabis contract Thursday, giving the tribe legal authority to grow hemp on its lands.

The agreement allows the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe to participate in Connecticut’s cannabis market while respecting tribal sovereignty and state health standards, the governor’s office said.

TheAct on Responsible and Fair Regulation of Adult Use of Cannabiscoordinates state and tribal regulations for the storage, production, delivery, processing and use of cannabis. It was held in June 2021.

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribe has yet to authorize any adult cannabis businesses, but a contract signed Thursday will allow future tribally licensed operations.

The company previously announced plans to separate adult and medical use

After set script, another public cannabis operator separated its medical marijuana from adult marijuana in an attempt to go public on the New York Stock Exchange.

But California-based vertically integrated operator Glass House Brands said in documents filed Thursday that it plans to go further than listing on the NYSE. In particular, the company stated that it is preparing for export and interstate trade.

The company previously said in a press release on Wednesday that it had applied to list on the NYSE after “unbundling” its medical and adult businesses.

If successful, Glass House would become the second U.S. cannabis company to go public on a major U.S. exchange, following Florida-based multi-state marijuana operator Trulieve Cannabis Corp.
