Can Cannabis Help With Chronic Pain?

Chronic pain is the most common reason people turn to medical marijuana. According to a 2019 study, two-thirds of medical cannabis patients in the US listed pain as their qualifying condition.

Thanks to the lifting of cannabis prohibitions and advances in medical research, we now have a solid body of clinical evidence that medical marijuana preparations work for various types of chronic pain.

Many of those medical studies demonstrate that cannabis is an effective treatment for chronic pain — from cancer, neuropathy, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, migraine, and others.

That research is welcome news for sufferers for several reasons. Firstly, chronic pain conditions don’t always respond to standard treatment. Secondly, marijuana has less serious side effects than many prescription pain medications, including a much lower risk of addiction and almost zero risk of fatal overdose.

After Massachusetts cannabis worker died from asthma attack, state pushes marijuana industry to take extra safety steps

After a Bay State cannabis worker suffered an asthma attack and died, the state Department of Public Health is pushing the local marijuana industry to take extra safety steps to prevent work-related asthma.

A Trulieve Cannabis Corp. employee who was packaging ground cannabis into pre-rolls at the company’s Holyoke processing facility suffered an asthma attack and later died in the hospital last year. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigated, and the company later settled with OSHA.

DPH and OSHA confirmed that the death of the 27-year-old production technician was the first known occupational asthma fatality in the U.S. cannabis workforce.

Marijuana use raises risk of heart attack, heart failure and stroke, studies say

A pair of studies have found that older adults who use marijuana have more risk of heart attack or stroke when hospitalized than non-users and are more likely to develop heart failure if they are a daily user.

The two studies, which have not been published, were presented Monday at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions in Philadelphia. Both studies excluded cannabis users who also smoke tobacco to focus solely on the cardiovascular effects of marijuana consumption.

Despite this, there are still questions about the long-term effects of medicinal cannabis use on certain demographics, specifically by mothers. People question whether a mother’s cannabis consumption affects breast milk, the fetus, stunts growth, or causes developmental disorders. Some even doubt a mother’s ability to care for her child if she’s consuming cannabis.

Even though the stigma around cannabis consumption is slowly but surely declining, we must provide certain groups with extra support to get the most out of their experience with the product.
