Indigenous cannabis entrepreneurs underrepresented in Canada, data suggests

Cannabis entrepreneurs in Indigenous communities are significantly underrepresented within Canada’s cultivation and retail marijuana industry, new data compiled by MJBizDaily suggests.

MJBizDaily research also found that the country’s largest provinces by population – Ontario and Quebec – have not reached any government-to-government deals regarding cannabis regulation with First Nations since 2018, a potential factor for their general absence from the federally legal industry.

Among the 755 unique cannabis corporations licensed by Canada’s federal government as of last year – mostly cultivators and processors – only six were located in an Indigenous community, or 0.8% of all licensees.

And among more than 3,300 provincially authorized recreational marijuana stores across the country, approximately 24 were situated on First Nations reserves at that time, or 0.7% of the retailers in Canada.

MJBizCon panelists issue cannabis industry predictions for 2025

LAS VEGAS – Hearings to reschedule marijuana began only this week, but the cannabis industry should look for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to reclassify the plant in 2025.

That’s the prediction that MJBizDaily political reporter Chris Roberts made Wednesday during the annual “State of the Industry” general session at MJBizCon, the world’s largest B2B cannabis industry event.

Florida approves 22 applicants for medical marijuana dispensary licenses

The wait is over for 74 applicants in Florida hoping to secure Medical Marijuana Treatment Center licenses.

The state’s Office of Medical Marijuana Use on Tuesday published the list of 22 companies that received “letters of intent to approve” their license applications.

In Florida, medical cannabis dispensaries are called Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers (MMTC).

The successful applicants were:

Rejected applicants sue Minnesota over marijuana social equity licensing process

Two women are suing Minnesota’s cannabis regulator after being denied an opportunity to participate in the upcoming lottery for adult-use marijuana social equity business licenses.

Cristina Aranguiz and Jodi Connolly allege in a lawsuit they filed Thursday allege that Minnesota’s Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) made an “arbitrary and capricious decision” in denying their applications to participate in the lottery and offered no explanation, the Minnesota Reformer reported.

Earlier this week, the OCM announced that roughly two-thirds of the 1,817 social equity license applicants had been disqualified because they failed to complete the application process, turned in multiple applications or disguised the true investors in their companies.
