North Carolina medical cannabis bill advances

A bill to legalize the cultivation and sale of medical marijuana in North Carolina is advancing through the Republican-controlled state Legislature with support from the state’s Democratic governor.

Senate Bill 3, the NC Compassionate Care Act, cleared a state Senate committee last week and could go to the floor of the full Senate for a vote in the coming weeks, ABC-13 reported.

If passed by both houses of the General Assembly and signed into law by Gov. Roy Cooper, the bill would allow people suffering from a familiar list of conditions – including AIDS, cancer, and PTSD – to legally access marijuana with permission from a doctor.

The Senate passed a similar version of the bill last year. That bill died in the state House of Representatives without a vote.

Prospects this year are much improved, with Cooper’s signature near-guaranteed and chances of passage in

A new study on hemp microorganisms could ultimately help researchers, scientists and growers boost production of CBD and other valuable compounds such as terpenes.

The University of Houston study – titled “Microbiome diversity and variations in industrial hemp genotypes” and published in Nature magazine – examined communities of microbiomes living in and around the roots and leaves of four types of hemp plants.

University of Houston researchers compared how those microorganisms differ between hemp grown for fiber and hemp grown for CBD production.

“Understanding these microorganisms can also lead to more sustainable farming methods, using nature to boost plant growth instead of relying heavily on chemicals,” Waqar Ahmad, an author of the study and doctoral student of lead researcher Abdul Latif Khan,

Those popular and long-sought-after wins are also what the Nevada Democrat and newly minted co-chair of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus’ immediate predecessors chased after, Titus acknowledged during an interview with MJBizDaily.

Titus, whose new caucus co-chair is fellow Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, spoke with MJBizDaily only days after the newly seated Congress voted to certify the November presidential election that will allow Donald Trump return to

Four New York City marijuana retailers with social equity licenses are suing state regulators, claiming that recently issued exceptions to a law imposing a 1,000-foot barrier between stores is “undermining” their businesses.

It’s the latest legal challenge against the state Office of Cannabis Management (OCM), which is overseeing a $1 billion industry that’s still recovering from a botched start marred by long bureaucratic delays, a rampaging illicit market and multiple lawsuits.

The latest lawsuit, filed Thursday in state court in Manhattan, accuses the OCM and the New York Cannabis Control Board (CCB) of “secretly” offering new license applicants exceptions to the state law requiring stores to be 1,000 feet from one another in cities with a population of 20,000 or more.

The four
