Leafly Buzz: 13 top cannabis strains of August 2023

Published

on

Labor Day or not—summer just keeps simmering along on the West Coast.

Up in the cannabis heartland of Humboldt County, the summer light dep crop moves out to stores, while the full-sun plants launch their flowers.

This month’s Leafy Buzz comes straight from a major Eureka, CA pot contest—the Transbay Challenge IV. There, we judged 18 flowers over six hours and came away with armfuls of buds to review.

Here are the cheat codes to the best bongloads of August. Here’s another edition of Leafly Buzz.

Moonbow

⬆ 2%

Moonbow #99 grown by Archive Portland. Indica hybrid. (David Downs/Leafly)
Moonbow #99 grown by Archive Portland. Indica hybrid. (David Downs/Leafly)

Moonbow brightens this fall—up 2% in traffic on Leafly, thanks to the amazing slew of Moonbow cuts found out west. Archive Seeds’ cross of Z x Dosidos makes for a much more dank, full-bodied, and less finicky Z. Our fresh nugs from Archive Portland had a lot of the prickly grandfather Face Off OG behind the pretty purple buds. This strong indica hybrid worked great with a walk among the towering redwoods, or gaming with the homies.

Headband

⬆ 2.7%

Headband from UpNorth. Sativa hybrid. (David Downs/Leafly)

Classic OG Kush x Sour Diesel edges up nearly 3% this month thanks to its must-have diesel and lemon pungence, and its hybrid sativa effects. Despite its age, phenomenal cuts of Headband still circulate and show how the old stuff bangs just as hard as the new flavors. Get your 3,000 steps in, or take a cool river plunge on Headband.

Lamb’s Bread

⬇ 12%

Lambs Bread from UpNorth. Sativa. (David Downs/Leafly)

We check in with another classic, iconic strain, sighted again in the Humboldt heartland: Lamb’s Bread. What sativa is it made from? Who exactly bred it? We may never truly know. But since the ’80s this Bob Marley-approved cultivar has powered barbecues, games of soccer, jam sessions, and gardening.

Purple Urkle

⬆ 24%

What’s going on with Purple Urkle, West Coast? Strain page views are up 24% month over month, amid fresh sightings of Purple Urkle in the wild. Purple Urkle has been in the Leafly database since the beginning, in 2010, and is thought to be a type of Mendo Purps with a grape, berry, plum taste. It’ll leave you sleepy, happy, and so relaxed you don’t care if it’s the real Urkle or a re-name. (The real Urkle is out there, though.)

Canna Country’s ‘The 26’

Multiple sources spoke in hushed tones of this must-see new cultivar from the farm Canna Country in the Emerald Triangle. We’re still learning more about it, but ‘The 26’ as it’s called is reportedly Forbidden Fruit x the breeder’s own Cherimoya. The 26 already distinguished itself at The Emerald Cup, and it reportedly scores the highest in the state for the terpene ocimene. It’s purple with notes of citrus, flower blossoms, and candy. Reggie Weedman reportedly bred the #26 with Ted Blair, owner of Canna Country.

Cartel Cut

There’s a new big OG Kush phenotype around Humboldt—the Cartel Cut. Growers So Hum Royal handed us a fistful of it at the Old Town Farmers Market in Eureka on Aug. 26. Meanwhile, bulk grower Xotic Flavorz produces hundreds of pounds of dried bud per week including the Cartel Cut. It’s got OG’s spikey, green look and piney, hashy, OG smell. Everyone knows what to do with OGs—roll them up in fat joints and get blazed on some indica hybrid chillaxation.

Sherb Haze

Sherbert Haze by Moon Made Farms. Hybrid. (David Downs/Leafly)
Sherbert Haze by Moon Made Farms. Hybrid. (David Downs/Leafly)

The modern blockbuster Sunset Sherbert and the 1980s classic Haze—how have these two never hooked up? Moon Made Farms’ Tina Gordon handed us a pouch of this perfect cross, fresh from the curing room for her summer deps. Sherb Haze puts Sherbert’s creamy berry body underneath Haze’s bright, sugary, grassy top note. You can wake and bake with it, and smoke it in the afternoon, or party with it to stay up late. Grab Moon Made for flowers that are Sun+Earth Certified, sungrown, and aligned with Mother Earth.

Mom’s Spaghetti

(Courtesy Clout King)
(Courtesy Clout King)

The hype flower brand Clout King of California and Michigan sells this unique, super-modern cross of GMO Rootbeer x Carbon Fiber. Mom’s Spaghetti looks ample and stunning, and smells of smooth fuel with notes of cinnamon and nutmeg. Indica hybrids like this work best with a relaxing hobby, like chewing through “The Lord of the Rings” books, or binging “Real Housewives.”

Sake Bomb by Bombatta, CA

Bombatta brand Sake Bomb. Hybrid. (David Downs/Leafly)
Bombatta brand Sake Bomb. Hybrid. (David Downs/Leafly)

All the flavors of the moment make Sake Bomb the star it’s born to be: Runtz, Gushers, and Lemon Cherry Gelato combine, and mix with Zkittlez and Kush Mints. Of course, this is flame. The new brand Bombatta uses these dope glass jars with the grinder built into the top. But a grinder is only as good as what goes into it. The Sake Bomb felt like the grand finale in an explosive launch for Bombatta flavors. You get a deep, syrupy, berry, cherry, tropical smell and taste, and this chill hybrid indica effect that melts away the stress of a road trip. Great camping medicine.

Burning up the charts

Z by Alien Labs, CA

Alien Labs Z. Hybrid. (David Downs/Leafly)
Alien Labs Z. Hybrid. (David Downs/Leafly)

Grab one of the last jars while you still can—Alien Labs’ summer batches of Z check all the boxes. Years into the strain’s release, Z continues to gobble up market share, like the omicron variant of weed. Look on the podium of any contest this year and it’s a fair bet that Z, or a child of Z, stands up there. Royal Budline’s Z again bested nearly all comers at the Transbay Challenge IV qualifier in Eureka, CA. Aug. 26. Alien Labs’ Z smells and tastes tart, syrupy, gassy, rich, and ideal. The potent hybrid induces a vivid, neon head change that made “Oppenheimer” on IMAX even more badass.

Ballin out

MAC Flurry by Lyfted, CA

Lyfted Farms MAC Flurry. Hybrid. (David Downs/Leafly)
Lyfted Farms MAC Flurry. Hybrid. (David Downs/Leafly)

Breeder Capulator’s MAC1 is so good and multi-faceted, brands can just keep re-releasing it under different names and it’ll sell on the top shelf. Modesto, CA brand Lyfted’s indoor-grown MAC Flurry shows why we keep returning to the MAC. It’s sleeted and complex-smelling with butter, vanilla, and citrus notes that reference gogurt. A MAC took the elite Ego Clash contest in Humboldt last year, and you can bet that you’ll see it win some more.

Ballin’ on a budget

Sherbanger #22 by 530, CA

Sherbanger 22 from 530. Hybrid. (David Downs/Leafly)
Sherbanger 22 from 530. Hybrid. (David Downs/Leafly)

The Sherbanger #22 strain continues to make noise this month since it broke out last October. Many, many seeds and clones of this cross of Sherbert and Headbanger have spread across the country, and the results are awesome. Large-scale farm ‘530’ on the Central Coast grows a fire cut of Sherbanger 22 that’s less than $40 out the door and good to the last nug. We love when you pour OG Kush’s gassy, lemon and pine on Sherbert’s creamy berry. Roll up a fat hash hole guilt-free with this value-priced flower.

Peanut Butter Breath rosin syrup, by Arcata Fire, CA

Peanut Butter Breath Rosin Syrup disposable vape from Arcata Fire. (David Downs/Leafly)
Peanut Butter Breath Rosin Syrup disposable vape from Arcata Fire. (David Downs/Leafly)

Probably the winningest street in all of hash-making exists in the sleepy little town of Arcata, CA. One of the manufacturers there, Arcata Fire, swept the entire Emerald Cup rosin carts category, winning first, second, and third place. So we got elated to receive a Peanut Butter Breath rosin syrup disposable cart from Arcata Fire themselves over the weekend. They hand-fill each high-grade pen with clarified, cold-cured 100% live rosin, made from fresh-frozen buds and solventless extraction. Bred by Thug Pug in Michigan, PB Breath crosses Dosidos to Mendo Breath, and Arcata Fire’s rosin syrup pen ports that peak flower experience over to a vape. It hits deep, rich, savory, sweet, and nutty, with zero artificial, harsh, or foul notes. Disposables are so handy on road trips, after long plane flights, or when the nosy neighbor kids are hanging around.

America’s top THC carts and pods of 420 ’24

Published

Having trouble onboarding to cannabis? It doesn’t get any easier this 4/20 than with a smooth, tasty, hard-hitting vape cartridge, pod, or all-in-one.

Don’t get confused by the jargon. Just place the device to your lips, inhale for 5 seconds, remove the vape from your lips, and keep inhaling for 5 seconds more. Hold the vapor in for a few seconds, and exhale. That’s it. Just keep the Doordash app open—because you are almost certainly gonna get lifted.

The year 2024 sees vapes become purer, more authentic, more widely available, and better than ever. Our golden age of vapor is innovating around “live rosin pens” that emit the essence of the plant while avoiding volatile solvents like butane. “Live resin” drenches the land as “fresh frozen” harvests take over from traditional dried and cured weed. And of course, classic distillate pens find new price points and looks. The average legal vape runs just $18 per gram, Leaflink reports, down 11.8% from 2023; making a mockery of inflation.

Below, we walk you through the coolest vapes for 2024, starting with the lineup of sweet all-in-ones in California, then expert picks for several legalization states.

Dope disposables in California

Disposable vaporizers make concentrates accessible for everyone, but can still be quite elite. Below, we celebrate the companies making the best oils and rosins possible for cutting-edge devices. The most fundamental element of why these products shine in a flooded marketplace is their source material. It’s “fire in, fire out,” and the folks on this list have had that figured out for a long time. A lot of these vape makers rule the flower market as well—allowing you to get at the best terps and experiences on offer. —Jimi Devine

Zeuz Pod

As the Z strain dominance continues into another decade when it comes to some of the best-tasting hash ever, The Original Z team continues to crush on the vape scene. The Original Z pod continues to reign as one of the elite offerings available on the recreational market. Every pull has a bit of that Mendocino magic that has helped the Z transcend everything that has come since on the hash scene as it continues to win contest after contest when the material is in the hands of the right people. —J.D.

Alien Labs

(Courtesy Alien Labs)
(Courtesy Alien Labs)

The pride of Sacramento has provided California with some of its favorite flavors over the years, most recently we saw Dark Web come onto the scene. It’s no shocker that the quality control they have put into every aspect of the brand is seen in their vaporizer offerings. The new full-gram disposables launched at the beginning of the year are now at full steam. The live resin inside is loaded with terps and heated by a mesh coil mechanism meant to preserve the experience through the life of the vape. —J.D.

Paper Planes

(Courtesy Paper Planes)
(Courtesy Paper Planes)

The team at Paper Planes has been producing top-shelf concentrates for years. We remember the badders they were bringing up to Sonoma for the OG High Times Cups back in the day, absolutely hitters. They were one of those companies that lost a little shine during the rosin revolution, despite the quality of the product never dipping at all. That quality led to them being one of only two 510-threaded cartridges mentioned on this list. It’s also not just the terps, but the delivery method. The Palm Pilot battery system they recently put out is top-notch. Beyond the stealth aspect of it looking like many of the popular nicotine vaporizers of the moment, the opaque shell also provides a lot more protection from light and heat degrading your oils than those types of carts would typically see. —J.D.

Dee Thai

(Courtesy Dee Thai)
(Courtesy Dee Thai)

When you’re a company that’s built its name on exotic flavors, you can’t play around when it finally comes to dropping some disposable rosin pens. Dee Thai made sure to check the boxes. Separately it makes a lot of sense since they’ve been one of the companies helping lead the way on solventless gummies made with rosin instead of other infusions. While the flavors won’t be quite as exotic as their Jackfruit or Tamarind gummies (yes they are a thing) they’ll certainly be up to snuff for anyone looking for a solid rosin pen. The company has been backboned by good rosins the whole time. —J.D.

Kalya

(Courtesy Kalya)
(Courtesy Kalya)

There is a solid argument to be made that Kalya’s disposables represent the most award-winning rosin available in that format. Kalya’s is a team that has spent years burying the hatchet with some of the best producers in Northern California in addition to the flower they are growing themselves in search of pristine resin heads to do their magic on. During their recent Piattella drop, Uncle’s Farm from Barcelona said that Kalya’s Z full melt was the cleanest hash he had ever seen in his life. We’re not surprised. The Kalya team has been crushing it across a spread of different flavors for years to take home plenty of trophies. They also put a lot of time into making sure the Kalya experience would not be degraded in a disposable format, you can certainly taste the results of those efforts until the last pull on the cartridge. —J.D.

Fidels

(Courtesy Fidels)
(Courtesy Fidels)

When it comes to hype levels driven by heat, few names surpass Fidel’s, post-pandemic. I’m a little biased from The Transbay Challenge win last year for his fantastic KMZ, an excellent pairing of Kush Mints and Z that is deserving of every accolade it’s received. But even if you cancel out the Jimi compliments, Fidel’s is one of the most popping brands in the galaxy. From Barcelona to Los Angeles, fans line up to get their hands on anything they can get, be it hashholes, seeds, or fashion collabs. While the vapes haven’t driven the masses as hype-thirsty as some of Fidel’s other products, the quality is the same level. So on a positive note, if you love disposable vapes, Fidel’s might be a pinch easier to get your hands on than some of his other offerings but even then, good luck. —J.D.

Jungle Boys

As far as storied Los Angeles cultivators that have rolled with the punches, it’s hard to put a name higher on the list than The Jungle Boys in the rec market. Even before getting their hands on their famed TLC headquarters back in the day, they were constantly filling the community with free game and tech via the forums where Ivan was an early king when it came to industrial-scale cultivation. Alongside their growth, they have always had their extraction efforts running on parallel tracks to their continued expansion across Southern California. With the amount of flowers they produce, it’s no surprise they have found a lot of great hash flavors over the years. It’s also important to note The Jungle Boys seem to have one of the most original flavor lineups across the board, you don’t see a lot of Z and Papayas like you do with other companies. The vapes are available at all their locations in Southern California. —J.D.

Ridgeline Farms

Many people believe the best sungrown terps in the world are produced in Southern Humboldt County when the season hits just right. I count myself among those people. Many people believe that Ridgeline Farms is the best of what SoHum has to offer, I’m also one of them. Now things are taking a wild turn as Ridgeline’s multiple-time world champion terps have found their way into a disposable format from the multi-award-winning Arcata Fire. These will likely be the most difficult ones to get your hands on, given how coveted they are going to be, but you should start looking now. And don’t be surprised when you see this season’s work from Ridgeline Farms on the podium in the months to come. —J.D.

Flavorade

(Courtesy Flavorade)
(Courtesy Flavorade)

The newest face on this lineup of absolute hitters, but deserving—Flavorade is the personal start-up of one of the best extractors in the state, Nick Coburn. Given Coburn’s award-winning pedigree, these 510-threaded carts are flying. There is currently a few-month waiting list in California for new shops to get in the mix. But once you taste the results, it’s quickly apparent why everyone had such high expectations for the latest company to see Coburn take the lead on making elite extracts. —J.D.

Community Cannabis

(Courtesy Community)
(Courtesy Community)

It’s easy to put Community right near the top of the list as one of the top hash producers that identifies as veteran-owned. Their rosins and the Santa Cruz Veterans Alliance Sour Diesel melt are the two things that stick out the most with that description. Community is a sister company to Kalya, so they have a lot of that great tech that’s supported Kalya’s trophy shelf in play, too. But the flavors are what really matter, and those are always more than exceptional. While the brand still feels rosin-heavy, the disposables are starting to pick up for sure. If you see them on shelves you’ll have the chance to smoke some heat from some folks that served their country. —J.D.

October 2023 Leafly HighLight: Rainbow Belts strain

Published

on

By

Hash heads, flavor chasers—your love of sweet-sour candy terps and sky-high-THC have brightened the spotlight on the Rainbow Belts strain this October. This Oregon cultivar’s fumed-out blast of fuel, flowers, and citrus, and its rapid growth to national ubiquity make Rainbow Belts our Leafly HighLight for October.

There’s a reason why elite hashmakers like 710 Labs keep it around, and why Ember Valley just hunted hundreds of crosses of it. Rainbow Belts sweetens up any bowl or dab rig with a vivid, neon trip down a syrupy road of lime and stone fruit. Grab your sunglasses, Rainbow Belts mixes the Leafly Strain of the year 2021 DoSiDos with the winningest strain in current cannabis, Zkittlez—times Z again.

LA Family Farms Rainbow Belts (David Downs:Leafly)

In the database since 2021, Rainbow Belts has notched 2,662 likes, 65 reviews, and a score of 4.4 out of 5. Folks note its sweet, tropical, treefruit taste and its talkative, euphoric, and giggly effects.

“The taste is incredibly fruity like Trix cereal, both on inhale & exhale,” said one reviewer.

“This is probably in the top five tastiest flower I’ve ever smoked,” said another.

Bred for potency, its dominant terpenes caryophyllene, linalool, and limonene can brighten up the mood and bring on sleep, reviewers report. It’s a great treat for some relaxing self-care.

“This might be my favorite strain of all time!”

Los Angeles keeps it high-grade with Ember Valley live rosin RB grams for $39, Real Deal Resin rosin, Dabwoods live rosin carts, and Field live rosin.

In 2023, Rainbow Belts took 1st and 2nd in the Spannabis Champions Cup 2023. RB shows up in wins at Ego Clash, as well as High Times Cups. And Rainbow Belts often competes against its own parents Z, and Moonbow. That’s wild.

Rainbow Belts terpenes

Rainbow Belts’ top three aroma molecules—terpenes—average out in lab samples to: gassy caryophyllene; floral linalool; and tart limonene. You can hunt that terp profile in Leafly Strains for similar effects: look up caryophyllene + linalool + limonene. See how similar Rainbow Belts is to Z’s caryophyllene-linalool-humulene combo? Look at how Dosidos matches terps with its grandchild, just in different ratios: limonene, caryophyllene, and linalool.

It’s a great inheritor of Skunk and Chem flavors. Donny Burger hits arousing, giggly, and freakin’ euphoric—fun for some new missions on Cyberpunk 2077. If you get too high, pet a kitten.

Trop Cherry

Relentless Genetics’ Mt. Trop x Cherry Cookies project Trop Cherry hasn’t lost its juice—it’s up 7.8% in monthly views. Snoop Dogg released some Trop Cherry on Death Row Cannabis this January, and we made it both a strain to watch in 2023, as well as Strain of Summer—and we’re not wrong. Trop Cherry has more body and character than like a Lemon Cherry Gelato and is great for daytime work and play.

Mai Tai

⬆ 8.7%

What the heck is going on with Mai Tai? Two things: 1) Hot breeder Clearwater Genetics has a hit with his Mai Tai #4 (a cross of easy to grow Purple Punch x classic Sunset Sherbert). And 2) the Jeeter brand has shipped a fleet of flavored Mai Tai joints in California. That’s confusing, because there’s already a legacy Mai Tai strain that mixed Maui Wowie x Tutti Frutti. Naming your weed strain after the popular rum, orange, and lime tropical drink just cannot be resisted. So that’s what’s going on with Mai Tai, up 8.7% in the western US.

Euroz

The Cannarado strain Euroz is about to blow growers away with a cakey Z cross that finishes weeks earlier than the competition. Leading California clonemakers Phinest said Euroz finishes in 45 days, honest to God. “The Euroz is wild,” said Phinest’s Ian. “Cannarado told us it’s 45 days and we didn’t believe him.” Z and Cake are two killer flavors of the decade, the cross has unreal bag appeal, and “hashes like a champ,” states Cannarado. Here comes the Euroz!

Znackz

Big California cloner Phinest’s head cultivator Ian has his own funky breeding label called Uncle Dad Vibes that’s a smash with discerning cultivators. For example, Preferred Gardens is doing well with Znackz—a cross of Chauffeur x Runtz. But what’s Chauffeur? A good ole mix of Z x Sundae Driver x Wedding Cake. Love that. Z’s body and loudness on cookie and cake is a guaranteed win with smokers. Dan at Preferred Gardens made the Znackz selection, and it’s now a huge seller in the Florida medical market.

Permanent Paradize

Seed Junky Genetics, the LA breeder of Leafly Strain of the Year 2022 Jealousy, keeps pushing into even rowdier smells and flavors with Permanent Paradize, a cross of Permanent Marker x Z Bx2. You get the creamy berry marker fumes of a refined Jealousy wedded to an improved version of Z (formerly Zkittlez). We expect deep marker fumes and tropical candy from this guaranteed strong hybrid. Good for the afternoons into the evening.

Beso

We’re closely watching everything from breeder Deo Farms, the maker of Zoap, RS-11, RS-54, and now Beso. Deo Farms is deep into his OZ Kush project with Zoap. Now, he adds his other big project with The Y—this protean Cookie Fam strain that he got from breeder Jigga. Beso is Zoap x The Y Bx2, and if that sounds like algebra, welcome to a real breeding project. Zoap has a floral lye and creamy berry note. The Y powers Gary Payton Cereal Milk, where it amplifies the sweet body of the GSC family. Deo Farms is keeping Beso and all his work close, so watch out for fakes.

New on shelves

Planet Red

by Alien Labs, CA

Alien Labs Planet Red (David Downs:Leafly Large
Alien Labs Planet Red (David Downs/Leafly Large

Some of the newest from Alien Labs, Planet Red’s guaranteed to move quickly off shelves this fall. It’s a cross of Red Pop x Apples & Bananas #9. And I’ll be damned—it actually adds that red soda pop note of Red Pop to the Apples & Bananas strain. Faygo Red Pop came out eight years ago, but Washington breeder Exotic Genetix’s work with it really put it on the radar. Keep an eye out for more Red Pop crosses out there like Artificial Red. Alien Labs holds onto its top-shelf reputation with these jars of hot-hot new-new.

Burning up the charts

RS-54

by Connected, CA

Connected RS-54 (David Downs/Leafly)
Connected RS-54 (David Downs/Leafly)

2023 might be the year of RS-54, aka Studio 54. Bred by Deo Farms, selected by Wizard Trees, and grown here by an indoor farm for Connected—this is hype in a jar. Don’t open this package in a coffee shop. Limey sherbert terps blast out to fill the room like some dance floor jam. RS-54 is legit party weed. To make the “RS” line—Deo Farms started with packs of Dying Breed OZ Kush, made some selections, and crossed them back together to get Pink Guava. Then, Deo added in some crowd favorite Sunset Sherbert. Wizard Trees selected the 11th and 54th plant from the RS pheno hunt and released RS-11 and RS-54. Wizard Trees also released clones of RS-54, starting a national wave that’s still building as we speak.

Gelonade

by Connected, CA

Connected Gelonade (David Downs/Leafly)
Connected Gelonade (David Downs/Leafly)

It’s not the talk of the moment, but we think one of our desert island strains might be Gelonade. Leave us on the beach with a pound of it, and everything else will take care of itself. This top-selling cross of Lemon Tree and Gelato is lemony, syrupy, sweet, thick, and flavorful. It’s great for a strong wake and bake, and goes well into the evening. Leafly reviews for Gelonade started in 2020, but the California brand Connected has been selling it since the medical days. It’s still a top-shelf splurge at the Area 41 dispensary in San Francisco, even as countless brands have commodified the cultivar. No worries—authentic, top-shelf Connected Gelonade keeps ballin’ out.

Ballin’ on a budget

Gelonade

by Elyon, CA

Step aside, legal market haters. Elyon’s bag of Gelonade served solid terps at $22 an eighth out the door at The Bloom Room in Pacifica, CA. And the budtender said they weren’t going to last long. We smoked this budget Gelonade back to back with the baller cut (above), and we gotta say, it holds its own! The Lemon Tree and Gelonade terps stand up to rougher handling, and totally come through on this bag. Elyon is a 5 year-old value brand that grows in greenhouses in the wine country of Sonoma County, CA. You can also find Gelonade smalls for $99 a half-ounce from Connected, as well as other value buys.
