3 charming 85+ point Maryland flowers for summer 2023

Published

on

Baltimore, MD goes by Charm City, but we’d argue the whole state is pretty charming—after a weekend of hitting some of the state’s biggest shops. It’s clear Marylanders love their weed, and keep their standards pretty high.

The state raked in over $10 million in sales between recreational and medical sales across almost 100 dispensaries statewide in their inaugural adult-use weekend, with buds grown from 18 licensed cultivators. Maryland is surrounded by states that have yet to catch up with weed legislation, and there were plenty of out-of-towners lined up with locals.

Maryland has its own Cookies store and plenty of MSO options, from TerrAscend and Verano brands, as well as some homegrown heroes like SunMed Growers and Curio Wellness. However, you can’t smell or see the bud before you buy it, so check those dates!

Thankfully, there were none of last year’s mids to be seen here—the flower we picked up was pungent and pretty recently harvested. Maryland loves its Gelato and Cake crosses, but also keeps a mix of classic strains, like Golden Goat from Nature’s Harvest. We picked a variety of effects and terpenes, from the creaminess of Blissful Wizard to the earthy funk of Snoop Dogg OG, to give you our first impressions of Maryland cannabis.

2090 Shit—Cookies, New Jersey, winter 2024

Price: $70/eighth

Cookies has done it again with 2090 Shit. As soon as you open the package, a powerful, pungent, gassy aroma fills the air; the smell is outrageously spectacular. The elegant buds—a cross of Snowman and Y Life—are a wonderful exotic green with orange hairs flooding all over them.

When I lit up, my first taste was very earthy and gassy with hints of lemon. The high is awesome: A very focus-driven feeling with some quality pressure behind the eyes. The body high is a creeper, but when it grabs you it’s like a new girlfriend, and she squeezes you tight; a full-body relaxation that is very soothing.

Cotton Candy—True North Family Farms, NY, winter 2024

Price: $50/eighth

The cultivators behind True North Family Farms hail from California, so their strain offerings reflect a taste for creamy Cookies and gas rather than the sours and hazes of the East Coast. My budtender recommended their Cotton Candy for something sedating and sweet. I’d call this a Cookies cousin—the buds have the same chunk and squish, and they waft that signature minty/cream/gas blend that lingers in the nose; it’s more subtle on the palate, but has that same pungent mouthfeel. Easily clocking in at over 20% THC, I agree that this is an unwinder; ideal as a nightcap or movie night companion where you want to savor your eats and shows.

Atomic Apple—Alien Labs, FL, winter 2024

Published

87 points out of 100

Price: $60/eighth

Coming in at 28% THC, this batch of Alien Labs’ Atomic Apple—available at Trulieve in Jacksonville, FL—is extremely solid and super stoney! Alien Labs is a Sacramento, CA-based hype brand that has taken its genetics national—including the medical market of Florida.

Atomic Apple boasts a very distinct GSC and OG nose and dense, sticky nugs; mostly green with some orangey-gold hairs and just a hint of purple. I noticed the distinct taste of yummy sour apple on a dry hit, along with the complex spicy and gassy notes of GSC and OG Kush. Atomic Apple is a Triangle Mints x Apple Fritter—so OG Kush meets Sour Diesel and Animal Cookies goodness.

I went for an evening stroll while smoking a joint of this strain, but soon I was straight up truckin’ like the Doo-Dah Man. Recommended!—Matthew Wytemire.
